The column header API hadn't been finalized for the most recent preview release. The API has been finalized for the next preview release and you'll find that column headers are just item renderers (not buttons) and can be specified with the headerRenderer property.

You should look at ColumnHeaderBar/set itemRenderer. If not specified, the default is DefaultColumnHeaderRenderer which is a subclass of Button. There are also firstItemRenderer and lastItemRenderer properties.
We have already reworked the ColumnHeaderBar quite a bit since the preview kit was built. It is now called GridColumnHeaderGroup.
thanks for the quick reply guys.
so I've created a renderer but I'm slightly confused since I dont know what type of data comes in it to visualize them. I know its the header of the respective column but how can I access that from the data object in the renderer?
I believe the way it works for the preview release is that the data property of your item renderer will be set with the field specified by the column's headerText property. If the column's headerText property isn't set it will use the column's dataField property.
