It seems like I have to pen select frame by frame to get what I need.. I know this cant be right.
You shoot the replacment in front of greenscreen and key it.
Finally after I do manage to get the selected new animated face cut out.. how do I blend it with the main video.. so the edges blend into the original head?
If the reenactment is good enough, simply blurring/ feathering the Alpha channel will suffice plus a few color corrections, if not, then you will still need to use masks and warping/ morphing to make it fit.
Thanks guys... as to using a green screen that wont work for what I have. It's a film of an old buddy of mine who is much older now. I need his young footage which was not on green screen. So does that mean I have no choice but to cut his face out frame by frame? AE doesn't have anyway to track a selection around a video to be placed over another video?
Cutting out a piece of video to use in another is called rotoscoping and there are several ways to do it. This page provides a lot of tips and tricks for how to do it in AE. CS5's new Roto Brush helps a lot with certain shots, so you might look into using it, but you will (most likely) have to clean it up a bit.
