What is the correct way to programmatically determine that a UDP connection has failed?

I'd like to implement a fallback, or at the very least, an informative error message when the Stratus UDP connection was not possible due to firewall or NAT issues. At the moment I'm using a timer that tries to replay a stream, but I'm not sure that the failure to play the stream is due to the UDP connection failure.

What is the correct way to do this?

PS. Recently, my p2p application was working fine (as was the sample cirrus application: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/cirrus/samples/). However, over the last few weeks, I have only been able to get my app, and the cirrus sample to work locally. Any remote clients I connect with fail.

I have not changed my router, firewall or ISP; I am at a loss as to why the apps are suddenly not working.
