Why do so many instances of acrord32info.exe run when openning up PDF documents.

I have customers who complain that their PC are crawling along even though they only have a few programs open. When I look at the list of programs running I find that there are multiple instances of acrord32info.exe running. Once I delete the excess baggage and reboot the machine they can once again use their computer. What is the purpose of acrord32info.exe? Can I safely delete acrord32info.exe? Why are there multiple copies of acrord32info.exe persisting in memory after PDF documents are closed? The same thing happens to users of Acrobat 9.0 where they end up with multiple copies of the  corresponding file AcrobatInfo.exe.
