    template update and kaosweaver

      When KW adds code to the head tag in a page that is linked to a template, does updating the template itself remove the KW code in the linked page?  It appears not to but I would like confirmation.

      Thanks

          Nope.  KW adds the code to the editable region in the head of the page.  Updating the template does not touch editable region contents.

            Thanks so much for the rapid reply.  The reason I ask is because the code shows the KW functions in the greyed out area of the page but they aren't in the template <head> itself.  And I never typed them in, of course.

            I'm using DW8 on a Mac / Leopard.

              Is this code within an editable region? If it is, it's safe.  If it's not, we have witnessed a miracle.

                The code is not editable in the page with the KW calculator.  The code doesn't appear in the template itself.

                I just created a new page and applied the template.  I then created a form and use KW to do the math.  I looked in the template part and this appeared in grey non-editable area:

                function MM_findObj(n, d) { //v4.01

                  var p,i,x;  if(!d) d=document; if((p=n.indexOf("?"))>0&&parent.frames.length) {

                    d=parent.frames[n.substring(p+1)].document; n=n.substring(0,p);}

                  if(!(x=d[n])&&d.all) x=d.all[n]; for (i=0;!x&&i<d.forms.length;i++) x=d.forms[i][n];

                  for(i=0;!x&&d.layers&&i<d.layers.length;i++) x=MM_findObj(n,d.layers[i].document);

                  if(!x && d.getElementById) x=d.getElementById(n); return x;

                }

                function KW_getVal(o){ //v1.2

                var retVal="0";if (o.type=="select-one")

                {retVal=(o.selectedIndex==-1)?0:o.options[o.selectedIndex].value;}

                else if (o.length>1){for (var i=0;i<o.length;i++) if (o[i].checked) retVal=o[i].value;

                } else if (o.type=="checkbox") {retVal=(o.checked)?o.value:0;} else {

                retVal=Number(o.value)}return parseFloat(retVal);

                }

                I then deleted the KW behavior and the form and the above text was gone.

                Not being religious, a miracle would be very hard to explain

                  I'll bet it is. You are misunderstanding my question.  I asked "Is it in an editable region".  You replied "It is in a gray non-editable region".  But it could still be gray even though it's in an editable region.  Please either show us this code, or evaluate whether there is an editable region tag around this code.  See - people still insert javascript as if it were 1990, by placing it within HTML comments - that makes it gray in DW's Code view, e.g.,

                  <script type="text/javascript">

                  <!--

                  window.onload=("This is gray!");

                  -->

                  </script>

                  It is still editable however, right?  If it's not, then I have to see it to believe it.

                    I went to the code in the head, placed the cursor near text and tried to delete it.  It beeped at me but would do nothing.  Let me know how I can help solve the problem.  Screen shot?  Mail the code to you?  Don't know what the forum allows.

                    The web page is here:

                    http://righttax.org/calc.html

                    I copied the source from the page, saved to a text file and it too does the same thing in DW.  I swear I didn't write the code to the HEAD tag, honest.

                      That is seriously weird.  Your template is flawed, though.

                      There is no editable region around the <title> tag - this means that you cannot change the title on any child page (try it!), and there is no secondary editable region called "head" in the head of the page, both of which are required for normal template functionality.  How the javascript gets in there escapes me - you cannot add any content to non-editable regions of a template child page.

                      Post the code for the template here so we can see what you have....

                        Flawed it may be but DW wrote it.  Clearly I'm not capable.  Here is the .dwt file  and you can see the KW functions aren't there.

                            DW is not the only one responsible for this flawed page.

                            Try this.  Create a new, blank HTML page and use FILE | Save as Template....  Look at the title tag.  Is it in an editable region?  Look in the head of the page.  Is there an editable region in it called "head".  The answer to both questions will be "yes".  Now look at your template.  Do you see either of those regions there?  No.  So either you (or someone) deleted them, or your template was created improperly.  Which DW are you using?  I recall there there was an issue with earlier versions of DW that could cause a template just like this to be created, but I forget how it came about.

                            Now - to get the KW code on the page, you spawned a child page from the template (NEW | Page from template..., etc.), then applied the KW behavior to this new child page?

                              It looks like I must have made the wrong selections when I initially saved the template or applied to a page.

                              Am I better off leaving it as is since it's working, as far as I can tell?

                              If not,

                              Where do I insert editable regions you suggested be in the template?

                              When applying a template what do I think about when deciding on assigning parts?

                              I'm surprised DW allowed me to muck up the template - unless I just ignored warnings?  Not likely but

                              the site is several years old and I wouldn't swear to it.

                              You've been a great help.

                                I would fix it.

                                Where do I insert editable regions you suggested be in the template?

                                In the template file, change this -

                                <title>Untitled Document</title>

                                to this -

                                <!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="doctitle" -->

                                <title>Untitled Document</title>

                                <!-- TemplateEndEditable -->

                                and this -

                                </head>

                                to this -

                                <!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="head" -->

                                <!-- TemplateEndEditable -->

                                </head>
                                Now you should be set.

                                When applying a template what do I think about when deciding on assigning parts?

                                What will change on each page.  Those are editable regions.  Or do you mean that you are applying templates to existing pages?  That's MUCH more troublesome.

                                I'm surprised DW allowed me to muck up the template - unless I just ignored warnings?

                                As I recall, DW8 would allow you to create a new template in such a way that it didn't contain those necessary regions - maybe it was File > New Template?

                                I dunno....
