No file names in the Files panel?

    Budo Cat Community Member

My files panel does not show the names of my files. It shows file size, type and date modified. But in the far left column, I see only folder icons and, within those folders, a column of icons. But no file names.

I checked the "File View Columns" category in the site definitions window, and found that "name" was marked as "show." So I'm not sure what else I should be doing to show the file names in the panel.

      .

Thanks to anyone who can help. This is more than an inconvenience, as I need to rename some files today.

Mac or PC? Which version of DW? Can you post a screenshot? Has this just started happening?

            Hi John,

I'm using CS4 on a year-old Mac. When I started the site a few months ago, I seem to recall seeing the file names. But I can't be sure. I was brand new to Dreamweaver, and a little overwhlemed with everything. But I've noticed over the past several weeks that the file names weren't there. At least, not always. I did see them a couple of times, when I was linking to internal pages. But usually, file names weren't there when I turned on Dreamweaver.

I'd be happy to post a screenshot, if you tell me how to do it. (I tried Command A, but couldn't paste it into a document.)

            Thanks much for your help.

Re: screenshot. Use the camera icon in the editing screen when creating a post.

Because the Files panel isn't actually a file, I can't attach it using the camera icon. I tried doing a screen grab (cmd-shift-3 and cmd-shift-4), but it didn't work. Unlees you know another way to capture an image of the Files panel, I won't be able to upload a picture.

                  Hi Budo,

in addition to John and to dissipate any remaining doubts, here we are:

I have the same problem with this no files in the files panel. I usually take a screen shot with "Grab" but not possible due to the fact that the files panel disappears when I open "Grab." I'm trying CS5. Don't think I ever had this problem in CS4. I tried "Reset Classic" workspace but it didn't help.

                      Hi,

I rember a thread here in the forum about screenshots, in about this way: "capturing screen shots using "SnagIt."

                      For other products use Google.

Well, this is very strange. I just tried again to figure out how to upload an image, using both the camera icon and Grab, but without success. And as I was writing another post about how unsuccessfl I was, I checked my Files panel again and... my file names are now listed there.

It just doesn't make sense. When I checked five minutes ago, the file names weren't there. I leave the screen, come back to it ... and now they're there. I'm glad, but bewildered.

Thanks again, everyone. If anyone has ideas on how to ensure the file names stay put, let me know.

                          Hi Budo,

--- misguided answer, I had to delete this, it's already to late here! Off to bed! ---

If you go to the Menu Bar > Site (definition,) you will find an option to show or hide the various items like name, type, modified, size.

                            Manage Sites>Edit>Advanced Settings>File Columns.

If you hide one or more of the columns you don't need, there will be room for the File Names.

There are two possibilities that I can think of:

                              1. You have accidentally switched the menu at the top right of the Files panel from Local view to Remote server or something else.
                              2. The Local Files column wasn't wide enough. See the following screenshot for how to drag the column wider.
