I load an SWF with SWFLoader. Within the loaded .SWF, this.parentApplication is returning NULL. Been searching the internet for eight hours. It seems like there is so much about Flex that even Adobe itself doesn't fully understand (let alone anyone else.)

If you're using Flex 4 look up FlexGlobals.topApplication. If a different version there are other solutions.
I don't want the top level application. I want the parent Application.
One cause of the problem could be the SWFLoader component does not have a parent. Are you creating the SWFLoader in actionscript? Have you added the SWFLoader as a child of some component that has the application as a parent? Try debugging into the parentApplication() call and see why null is being returned.
