Where did 16GB go from my blu-ray disk?

I have a master file with one First Play menu, 6 Submenus, and 30 chapter menus and a project type of Blu-ray Mpeg2 720 X480.  Into this master file I imported 32 assets and deleted 9 chapter menus which were not needed.  I created 8 timelines (most of the assets are small- used for the motion background for my menus.  These smaller assets are about 240MB in total).  This process has worked before in successfully building and authoring 25Gb blu-ray disks.

This particular project, after I had made all my changes to the menus, updated the linking, etc. when I went to test the project showed a file size of 33.8GB.

The assets involved totalled approximately 16 GB.  Where did the other 17 GB come from?  I started deleting timelines to see if perhaps there was one which was causing the problems, this was not the case.  Finally I had deleted ALL the timelines and the file size was still 16.12 GB.  (My assets were still in the project but were no longer on any timelines).

Then I deleted ALL the sub and chapter menus and suddenly my file size was 112.3 MB!

Then I brought back all the Sub menus and my file size was 113.2MB.

Then I brought back all the Chapter menus and my file size was 115.2MB!

I then re created the 8 timelines, re-edited the menus, did all the links and went to build the disc.  The file size was now 17.79 GB and burned successfully to the disk.  So other than Doug Henning or David Copperfield who knows where the extra 16GB came from and vanished into thin air?
