    More questions about "mini-Projects"

    Tom Nickel

      Hello all,

I am creating yet another music-lessons project using Premiere Elements.

I plan to create a two DVD set.  My guess is that the length of each DVD

may approach 90 minutes, so some compression will be applied when

my final disc image gets created.

And, I want to break my rather large project into "mini-Projects".

The last time I had asked about this, I was informed to create mini-projects

by exporting segments of my project as follows:

"edit them completely, and then Export to DV-AVI Type II files w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio. These can then be Imported into "master Project," and assembled into a final."

For some reason, I was having trouble locating the "DV-AVI Type II Files" option.

I had simply exported to file type "avi".  Is there anything bad about using "avi" format

other than large file sizes?  i.e., is it a high quality file format?

Also, I have created a one mini-project by exporting three smaller segments and pulling them

into one medium sized mini-project.  (It's about 30 minutes long.)

I want to create two more of these medium sized mini-projects in the same manner.

Then, I would like to export these three medium sized mini-projects as "avi" files and import

      them into my finished/master version.

Will this degrade the video quality by essentially having performed two exports

      on the same material?

I hope that makes sense :-)

      Thank you,

          Tom,

You are either very close, or you are THERE. DV-AVI is a flavor of AVI, where you will be using the MS DV CODEC. You can check your settings in Share>AVI and if you have PAL DV, or NTSC DV (depends on where you live), you have DV-AVI Type II, as that is what PrE produces. There is also AVI (Uncompressed) which is unnecessarily large (DV-AVI will be ~13GB/hour), and other possible Compressors (CODEC's) that can be wrapped in the AVI container. What choices you have will be predicated on the various CODEC's you have installed on your system. Some, like CinePak by Radius are very old, and probably should not be chosen, unless one has a very compelling reason to use them. [On my machine, I have DivX, Lagarith, UT and several others, but these were added to my system, and will not necessarily be available to other users.]

Hope that this answers the DV-AVI Type II question. I'd show it to you, but only have PrE 4, and things have moved about some, and I do not want to confuse you, by showing something that might well look much different in your newer version.

          Good luck,

          Hunt

PS - DV-AVI Type II is slightly compressed (over AVI Uncompressed). Doing an Export/Share to DV-AVI is perfectly fine (I uncheck Recompress), but if one is doing a lot of intermediate Exports, each DV-AVI compression will be cumulative. Do enough of these, and one might start seeing degradation in the footage. If one does need to do a series of intermediate Exports, one of the lossless CODEC's, like Lagarith, or UT, might be a better option. These will slow things down a bit, as the system and program do need to Decompress to edit. I do not like AVI Uncompressed, as the files are gigantic, and will always go with one of the lossless CODEC's instead.

Thank you for your quick reply!

            Actually, I have

another problem .. I can't see my origial posting on the Forum

            in

order to reply to you .. I hope this email works!

            OK,

I am using Premeiere Elements 3.0  (I've purchased and installed 7.0

            but have

            yet to use it!)

Could you tell me how to

determine if I have DV-AVI Type II in my PrE 3.0/computer?

            Thanks again!

              Tom,

Other than some problems with block quotes, I can see the post fine.

In PrE 4, one would choose File>Export Movie, and that should be the same in PrE 3. The old "Export" settings were moved to the Share tab in PrE7.

Here is a look at the DV-AVI Export screen in PrE 4. Disregard the reference to Recompress, as that was done for another thread:

              DV-AVI_Recompress.jpg

Let us know if this is significantly different from what you see in PrE 3. Note: that image shows the settings in the Video tab.

Good luck, and hope that this helps,

                Hello Hunt,

                And thanks again ..

                Yes, in PrE 3.0 it

                appears to be under:

                - Export

                - Movie

                - Settings

                - Video

                - Recompress

Also, I have found that I am

apparently using: "Microsoft DV AVI" (although I've forgotten

                where I've found that info!)

                Sounds like I'm in business?

                Copious thanks!

(Any idea why I cannot relocate my

                thread on the forum?)

                Thx!
