Save as template in Captivate Mac?

    BalletMom Community Member

Hi, I am using Captivate 5 for Mac so I am a newbie. I cannot find a way to "SAVE-AS" .cptl. I am given no format choices on save-as, although I can create a new .cptl file. Also, I cannot see a way to apply a skin from an existing captivate to a new or other existing .cptx. My instructional designer, who is an experienced Captivate 4 user, gives me files to use for templates, but I cannot see a way to turn them into actual templates that I can pass along to my department as templates. I feel like a total idiot! I can only feel better if someone will point out to me the obvious button or menu that I am missing. Thanks in advance.

Also, once I can do this, I would appreciate being pointed to a list of exactly what can and cannot be specified in a Captivate 5 template.

There is no magic button. You're not missing anything.

In CP4 you were able to open a .cp file and Save As .cptl.  That's been the way it worked from version 1 to 4.

But Cp5 doesn't work the same way.  You can't save a .cptx file as .cptl template in Cp5.

The workflow now is File > New Project > Project Template.  You have to begin each new template from scratch.

I find it annoying too, but I think it's been done this way because Cp5 templates have some extra functionality built in that just isn't present in the normal .cptx files (e.g. placeholders).  I'm hoping we can get the old workflow re-instituted for Cp6.

If your Cp4 designer is still using Cp4, he/she can turn them into cptl files and then send them to you to upgrade them straight to Cp5 template format.

The other workaround you can do in Cp5 is simply to create a new .cptl file at the same dimensions as your .cptx and then copy/paste the slides you want over into the template.  A bit more work than Save As perhaps, but at least it then means you can end up with a template file for future use.

          Hope this helps.

Thanks, that is SO helpful! Can you point me to helpful documentation for Captivate 5 templates? And, if there are important differences, to any Mac-specific template issues? I am going nuts between with things that I thought were specific to one presentation showing up all over the place, and things that I meant to be global turning out to be presentation specific. I am willing to read documentation.

Glad to see you're willing to read documentation.  As a Techwriter, I'm all for it.

I'm not aware of any documentation available other than what you can get to from the Captivate 5 AIR help app.

In Cp5, go to Help > Adobe Captivate Help and search on the keyword: template
