The Dissolve - Vapor animation preset is a transition. It just fades a layer to expose another layer. Is it not doing this?
BTW, it's useful to get some terminology straight:
Animation presets (including text animation presets) are not effects. Animation presets are collections of layer properties; they can include effects, but they don't necessarily. The text animation presets do not, in general, include effects.
I recommend that you start here to learn After Effects:
Thanks you're right I do need to learn the terminology.
I'm just learning AE and was following along with a tutorial on Lynda.com. I do know what transitions and animations are, but I just didn't process the words. I was too busy trying to follow the workflow. I went to the Adobe link you gave, and I'm going to keep reading it.
I have another stupid question... I added a drop shadow to some text and when I export the comp to .SWF the shadow doesn't show up, but when I render it to .MOV the shadow is there. Why doesn't it show up in SWF?

You have Ignore chosen forthe Unsupported Features setting, which tells After Effects what to do with things that can't be exported as vectors to SWF format. See this page.
I found this page by doing this search.
SWF export is not a good format to use for most kinds of output from After Effects.
I again strongly recommend that you work your way in order through the materials linked to from here:
