if you are having a 32 bit system then as per the system requirements mention for Adobe Reader X, minimum service pack for XP should be service pack 3 ( http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/tech-specs.html)
you might be facing this problem because of you are running it on an unsupported platform.

Thank you for the response. I indicated the wrong version of Windows XP. In fact, I have SP3 installed. My Adobe Acrobat Reader is dead in the water, and I am now forced to look at other options.
I have the same problem. You are not alone. I'm going to keep searching because I see you have not been helped yet.
Seems like the MAPI.dll got corrupted! Some similar troubleshooting way posted at: http://blogs.chron.com/helpline/archives/2008/02/mapi32dll_error.html. Maybe you can try that out, if you feel comfortable about using it.
You are correct, my MAPI32.dll was corrupted. It had been changed by Mozilla at some point, and was a tiny file. Luckily Mozilla had made a backup in the same directory, so I renamed to current mapi32.dll with an "old", made a copy of the Mozilla backup and renamed it to mapi32.dll, rebooted, and swoosh, Adobe Reader works fine. Why Mozilla changed it I do not know. I use Firefox and Thunderbird.
Your fix probably would have worked but I didn't have to try it because Mozilla had thoughtfully left a backup when it corrupted my file!
Thank you for posting an answer.
Hi ! You are probably correct. Why Mozilla make à copy of Mapi32 before or after corrupting it, that is the question.
However I did not succeed to find the right version of Mapi in the right directory. Could you be so kind and send me the right one.

I experienced the same issue but I believe my problem was related to installing MS Office with Windows messaging installation disabled.
I was able to fix the problem by running the Windows fixmapi util.
If the other solutions here don't work you might want to try this:
In C:\winnt\system32 or C:\windows\system32, double-click Fixmapi.exe.
