This is a little off topic but there seems to be a lot of RAID knowledge around here.
I'm putting together a data workstation to support the Red One camera that will soon be upgraded to Epic this summer. I'll have a Dell XPS15 notebook with 1x eSATA and 2x USB3 ports available (also has expresscard slot so I can add more eSATA if needed). I'm looking for a small 4-5 drive RAID that can be set up on location for data offloading.
My two questions are 1) what drive tower to buy and 2) which RAID level?
Since this until will be packed into a foam padded Pellican case and taken on location I'd like to get an enclosure that will have locking drive bays. I'm looking at this model http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816216001 that has a120W power supply and will spin the drives up one at a time on startup or maybe this guy http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816322004&cm_re=usb_3_raid-_-16-322- 004-_-Product . USB3 would be a preferred way of connecting to the notebook as the Red SSD dock with use the eSATA.
For RAID I need fast and secure so I was thinking of RAID 10.
A NAS with Raid5 over your NIC.
