Pressing spacebar is never a way to preview audio in After Effects.
All of the methods mentioned on this page for previewing audio work in the Footage panel as well as in the Timeline panel.
So, if you double-click an audio footage item in the Project panel to open it in the Footage panel, you can then use RAM preview or audio-only preview to preview the audio.

Older versions opened a QT control by default. Inj newer versions you simply use the audio preview feature to view your files. AE still plays them in realtime, they just open in the footage window... The comma on the numpad is your friend....
yes. that's what i remember - QT playpack of audio files. and i knew that the spacebar did not preview audio in the past, but since there was no QT playback, i just thought i'd try it.
