1. Re: How to mix different types of footnotes? (*, 1)
P Spier Dec 15, 2010 12:05 PM (in response to MAmanogabriel1)InDesign does not have the abilty to mix the marker type for automated footnotes.
Some of the other regualrs who use them more often than I may have a better suggestion, but basically you are going to be stuck inserting the first note with the asterisk "by hand" on the page. It might work to include the text for the first note (including the asterisk) as part of the the note numbered 1, perhaps in an anchored text frame. I haven't tried this, so I don't know if it will actually work, and if it does I suspect you'd have to do a lot of playing around with the space above the first note to accomodate the extra text.

I have this book already designed, which is a compilation of various authors. Each chapter includes the name of the author next to the first footnote (1). The text continues using more footnotes in secuence (1, 2. 3... so on)
No I´ve been asked to change for an (*) just the first note, and the second needs to start wit (1). I can´t fin the correct way to do this. Te moment I manually change the (1) for an (*) the footnote disappear. In the footnotes options you have to choose only one type of footnote since it does not allow mixing. Any ideas???
I´m working on InDesign CS4. MacOs 10.6.4
Thnx in advance!
There was a thread on this same question recently. Search Google for terms like " InDesign different first footnote style" without quotes to help find it.
Search Google for "wishform" to find the link to Adobe's formal feature-enhancement and bug-reporting form.

3. Re: How to mix different types of footnotes? (*, 1)
[Jongware] Dec 15, 2010 12:53 PM (in response to peter at knowhowpro)There are two possible scenario's:
1. You have a star footnote on your first page, and your next note (#1) is on the same page. Don't insert the * note as a footnote, but just copy and paste its text on the line above the "1" numbered footnote, inside the same area. Insert the asterisk by hand.
2. You have a star footnote on your first page, and your next note is some pages further. Insert an asterisk where the * note would come, and insert the note itself as #1. Hide the footnote number by setting its color to [None]. Delete the "1" in the note, and type an asterisk. Then set your Footnote Options to re-start on Next Section, and set the next page to start a new section.
Both are rather clumsy work-arounds, so complain to Adobe by filling in the Feature Request Form, and -- just in case your request form is automatically re-directed straight into a thrash can -- let your voice be heard in the Feature Request Forum.
