I have seen this before (in this forum); it seems to happen only on Vista and Windows 7.
I vaguely remember that the solution was to
- uninstall Adobe Reader
- recreate the user profile under which to install Adobe Reader
- reinstall Adobe Reader
I cannot give you any more details, and I cannot find the topic where the solution was posted some time ago (forum search is again non-functional these days).

I have the same problem, I'm using windows 7 pro, system type is 64-bit.
