Detect if file open in another application

After giving it a couple of days on the AIR forum with no responses, I thought I'd ask my question in the Flex forum: I'm neither using Google well or finding appropriate search terms in the help file. I want to create a new SQLite database and, if the file exists, to delete it before saving a new version of the file. However, I've not yet figured out how to detect if a file is open in another application (database viewer) before it throws an error in the authoring environment. I've tried listening for IOErrorEvent but must not be doing something right. Suggestions on what to do before calling myFile.deleteFile() to catch if it is open in another app?
