    Another HD setup question

    Jay Knobbe Level 1

      This is my system...

      CS5 Production Premium

      Windows 7 64 bit

      HAF 932 X case with 4 fans

      Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R  v2.0

      i7 950

      EVGA GTX 470

      G.SKILL PI Series 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7T-6GBPI

Hyper 212 plus cooler with an additional fan

      1 Velicoraptor 300gb

      4 F3 1tb drives

      1 WD Black 1tb 32mb cache

      1 WD Black 2tb 64mb cache

      Coolermaster 1000w PSU

I need some advice on how to set up these drives

This is what I was thinking...

      WD Velo for the OS

      WD 2tb for storage

      WD 1tb for back up

and not sure on the 4 F3's

Cannot afford a controller card right now.

I have many hours of SD footage to load, along with newer HDV files

Also, if i read correctly, I should set them up with no partitions?

      Thank You

First, make your memory 3 x 4 GB sticks. 6 GB is not enough for decent performance.

Use your 4 F3's in two raid0 arrays on the mobo. Look here for the allocation of file types: Adobe Forums: Generic Guideline for Disk Setup

Partitioning will only cause wear and tear on your disks and make them slower, so don't use partitions.

            Thanks Harm,

I do have 6 sticks of this ram. I just couldn't swing the extra expense of the 4g sticks when I bought them 3 months ago.

Here's a couple of options that I might choose:

              Velociraptor - System

              F4 - Projects/Scratch

              F4 - Media

              F4 - Export

              F4 - DVD Images

              WD 2TB - Backup.

WD 1TB - Leave on a shelf as a replacement if an F4 ever dies.

              Or my preferred config:

              Velociraptor - System

              F4 - Projects/Scratch

F4x3 - Media (RAID 3 using an Areca card)

              WD 1TB - Exports

WD 2TB - DVD Images and Backup.

                Jim,

You must have overlooked this statement by the OP:

Cannot afford a controller card right now.

in which case an Areca card is out of the question, and secondly I think you are better off with a 4 disk raid3 than a 3 disk array. Put the DVD images on the 2 TB WD.

I didn't miss it.  But I did put it second, thinking that someday a card might be possible.

I'd not argue with the 4 disk array in theory, but then you're short one disk for my preferred setup of System/Projects/Media/Export/Backup.  (And I put them in that order on purpose.  As you drop disks, the last one in the sequence is combined with the one before.  So that with only four disks, you'd combine Backup and Export.  With three, you'd combine Backup, Export and Media.  Etc, etc.  The OP has enough for all five categories using a 3 disk array, which is why I suggested it.)

This is how I connected my HD's

                    ICH10R ports. Total of 6

                    4 1TB F3's (will try to set up in a Raid 0)

1 300BG WD Velo for the OS

eSATA connector from the front panel of my HAF X case

Marvell 9128 ports. Total of 2

                    2TB WD Black

                    1TB WD Black

GSATA (Gigabyte chip?) Total of 2

                    BR DVD burner

                    Open

Does this look like a good set up?

I question whether I should have the OS drive on the same chip as the drives that I will Raid.

Also I grew weary of trying to figure out what fans I should plug into what headers, so I removed the large Molex 4 pin connector and just plugged them into the MOBO willy nilly except for the CPU fans, which was obvious.

I'm learning as I go but it is a Sloooooowwwwwwww process.

                      Hi All,

I was kind of looking for a thumbs up or thumbs down as to how I connected my drives & fans to the MOBO before I turned it on and started to configure the drives.

It seems that there should be a purpose in plugging certain drives into the Intel chip vs the Marvell or Micron chip.

                      Your guidance is appreciated.

The Marvell is the SATAIII (6Gbps) controller; the JMicron is... junk. Here's how I'd do it:

ICH10R - set to RAID mode in BIOS

                        4 1TB F3 - RAID 5 (hit Ctrl+I during boot up when you see the ICH10R screen; build a RAID5 with these)

                        2TB WD Black

                        1TB WD Black

Marvell - set to AHCI mode in BIOS

1 300BG WD Velo for the OS

eSATA connector from the front panel of my HAF X case

                        GSATA

                        BR DVD burner

                        Open

Thanks for the guidance. It's what I was looking for.

And thanks to Harm & Jim also.
