Have to fill to delete in layer mask

I make a layer mask and then make a marque selection and press delete. Nothing happens. I then fill the selected area and it deletes it. How do I reverse this?

I'm sure there is something simple that I missing.

What are your Fore- and Background Colors?
Hitting D to reset them might help.
