Bill Hunt Dec 29, 2010 11:08 AM (in response to SteveH59)Steve,
Do not know the camera, but here are two thoughts for tests, or perhaps workflow alterations:
Plug in the camera (should get the bing/bong recognition tone from Windows - if not, you have issues elsewhere), transfer the files from it to the HDD with the software shipped with the camera.
Same as above, but see if Windows Explorer can see the camera as an external/removable HDD, and use that to Copy the files over.
Good luck, and let us know how those methods work, or do not work. Also, if Windows is NOT recognizing the camera, there will be more troubleshooting tips to follow - do you get the bing-bong, and does Windows Explorer "see" the camera?

Curt Y Dec 29, 2010 11:08 AM (in response to SteveH59)I would buy a usb card reader, believe it or not they are more reliable than using the download from the camera. there also may be a card reader on the computer, printer or monitor you might try.

Good advice. Most card-readers are also quicker, than hooking the camera up via USB.

SteveH59 Dec 29, 2010 12:36 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Hello
many thanks to you both for your replies.
I'll look into a card-reader if I can't resolve this, but usually I don't have problem with it.
Yes, I get the sound recognition noise when I plug in the cables and turn the camera on.
I have attached two screen shots. Windows is seeing the camera as a removable device as it would a flash drive, but that other image looks a bit bare to me. Usually it asks I I want Windows to copy the images from a camera or scanner, which I think might imply that some Windows settings have changed/files missing - and maybe that is why Photoshop cannot see the camera?
Thanks again.

Bill Hunt Dec 29, 2010 12:51 PM (in response to SteveH59)The recognition of the camera IS a good thing. That takes it beyond Windows Device Manager.
Now, I seem to remember something about the WAI connections being messed up. Cannot recall if that was something like a Windows update, or other problem (PS update?). I'll try some Searches for WAI with Photoshop, support and a few other words, and see if I can find something, and refresh my memory.
If it worked, but does not now, then something has changed. The trick is to find out what has changed, and find a way to get around that. It could be as simple as new hardware conflicting, or perhaps new software seizing control of things.
I would create a System Restore Point for today, then reboot to Safe Mode and choose to Restore to a Point, where it did work - test. Might need to try several System Restore Points to get back to the days, when it worked. If you find that things again work, you know the timeframe, and will need to do detective work to find out what it was, and address that. If that fails, you have only lost a few moments and reboots, since you created a System Restore Point for today. Easy to get back to now.
Good luck,
Hunt

Curt Y Dec 29, 2010 1:08 PM (in response to SteveH59)If trying to import into Bridge can you use the file/get photos from camera route?
Might also check the OS options for AutoLoad and see if someting there has changed.

SteveH59 Dec 29, 2010 1:32 PM (in response to SteveH59)Many thanks again.
System Restore seems a good idea - for some strange reason, others who have experienced this problem point to issues with Real Player which I did download recently, but then uninstalled. But I remember it saying that it could not uninstall all the files.
I'll post back!
Cheers

Bill Hunt Dec 29, 2010 4:04 PM (in response to SteveH59)Steve,
Real Player which I did download recently
That sends shivers up my spine. Going back a decade, or more, I installed Real Player (RealMedia). I found that program to be like a Trojan. It took forever to clean out. Just like Apple's QT Player (until fairly recently), it also went in an seized control over almost every possible file format, and it was not a simple task of just going into Control Panel>Folder Options>File Types and changing them back. Some element in Real Player would sneak back and seize them again.
It also wanted to update almost daily, and there was no OFF switch then. It fired a series of pop-ups, that had to be exited from manually, one at a time, with every possible media file that one attempted to open. Insidious, and I finally just wiped my C:\, reformatted, loaded everything else, and never, never looked back. I would not let a copy of Real Player into my neighborhood (the guard has his instructions to check... ), let alone onto one of my computers.
I am not saying that it is the culprit, but it's an easy target for me. Though they might have made a bunch of positive changes, any company that would write such a program to begin with, is off my radar screen forever.
Good luck, and hope that System Restore can work for you. If it does, I'd also do a good Registry clean up with a program like CCleaner (take the program's suggestion to backup your Registry), as there could be "stuff" in there, that was not completely cleaned out by System Restore, though that should get you the previous, unharmed Registry.
Good luck, and sorry to launch into a diatribe on Real Player. Just hated that program!

10. Re: No compatible devices detected - error
SteveH59 Dec 30, 2010 10:21 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)Hello Bill
Thanks for your spot-on reply.
I wasn't able to create a System Restore point in Safe Mode - Windows wouldn't give me access, and that's when I really started to worry. I was then uable, after a restart to access Windows normally: load DLLs needed for kernel error. Eventually, I had to reinstall Windows but I still couldn't move the mouse - seems like it was a faulty mouse port, although I had checked that hours earlier. It seems like it was a combination of issues.
But I will take your advice: no Real Player ever again (I have logged a call with their helpdesk, but I am not expecting a reply).
Happy New Year
Steve
