look that your page width is comfortably viewed by the majority of your site visitors without using scrollbars (not all too bad are 900 to 1100px). To view your site in a global way with critical eyes, "Google labs - Browser Size" is a very good tool:

This depends entirely on how much content you need to display per page and who your target audience is.

Using CNN, BBC and other top sites as an example, 1000px fixed-width, centered on screen works for the average laptop/desktop user. However, if you're targeting senior citizens, you may want to drop back to 900px. Or if you're targeting handheld devices, between 320px and 480px is a good range.
