Eugene Tyson Jan 4, 2011 4:06 AM (in response to MikeSaclier)Have you tried http://forums.adobe.com/thread/526990

2. Re: Unable to save new file
P Spier Jan 4, 2011 7:32 AM (in response to MikeSaclier)You might also try opeing the file as a copy. That message looks like the file is corrupt in memory.

3. Re: Unable to save new file
MikeSaclier Jan 5, 2011 3:52 AM (in response to Eugene Tyson)Yes, but it didn't seem to work, or not where it needed to work. I edit a Mac user group newsletter. The problem manifests itself in refusing to allow me to open a template file and either save it as a document or re-save it as a template.
Similarly, in general, opening a back issue of the newsletter and fixing up the "missing" fonts which appear as errors (the result of InDesign's insistence that some OpenType fonts are TrueType) and then trying to save it either under it's own filename or a new one fails. I have had one or two instances of this where it worked and have managed to save the file.
On the other hand, an attempt to move a Word 2008 file into ID and save it failed also.

4. Re: Unable to save new file
Eugene Tyson Jan 5, 2011 3:58 AM (in response to MikeSaclier)Seems perhaps there is an issue with the fonts in the document.
Fix up the font issues then
Try File>Export and choose .IDML (Indesign markup langauge)
Open the IDML file in InDesign and see if you can save it (check the fonts to make sure there are no errors)

5. Re: Unable to save new file
MikeSaclier Jan 5, 2011 3:59 AM (in response to P Spier)I'm not sure what you mean by "opening the file as a copy". I've tried opening a copy of a file, which didn't achieve anything, but that doesn't sound like what you are suggesting. What have I missed?

6. Re: Unable to save new file
Eugene Tyson Jan 5, 2011 4:13 AM (in response to MikeSaclier)When you use FILE>OPEN in the bottom left corner are options to open as "normal", "original" or "copy"

7. Re: Unable to save new file
MikeSaclier Jan 5, 2011 5:33 AM (in response to Eugene Tyson)Alas, that didn't work either.

9. Re: Unable to save new file
P Spier Jan 5, 2011 6:06 AM (in response to MikeSaclier)Have you checked disk permissions? Can you open and save these files on another system, or are they now toast? What about in a new user account?
When you say hardware upgrade, what exactly did you do?

Yes, but with no result.

No. I have no other system to use. I can open them but I can't save them. Nor can I save new files.
What about in a new user account?
That's a possibility that hadn't occurred to me. I'll try it.

I bought a new iMac and used Migration Assistant to move my files from the old Mac to the new one. This turned out to be less than successful. For example, all applications requiring a serial number or registration key had had them stripped out so that every time I opened an application on the new machine I was asked to re-enter the sn/key. I made the mistaken supposition that it would migrate my email folders and messages which it didn't. And, of course, the problems with CS5 which have emerged

MikeSaclier Jan 5, 2011 8:57 PM (in response to Eugene Tyson)Sorry I'd missed the "Copy" option. I've tried it now and it didn't help.

Mike:
You might find some useful info in recent threads at http://www.macsupportcentral.com/ about setting up new Macs and the use of Migration Assistant, etc.
HTH

Bingo!! Thanks Peter. To my embarrassment I discovered that in the process of the migration, I somehow created a new User. When I logged him/me out and restarted with the old user, everything seems to have come good. -

Thanks Peter. I should have been more proactive in seeking information before I started. I'll check that link.

FWIW, I don't put much faith in migration tools. I find it's a lot more reliable to reinstall applications and manually move the data files.
