Numbered Table of Contents

I am looking to see if there is a way to automatically add the numbered points to the Table of Contents.

I have sections of my documentation that are numbered and I would like the numbers to appear in the table of contents. Obviously doing this manually means every time I have an addition that does not go at the end, I would be required to renumber everything after.
Is there a way to do this without the manual work? Other suggestions?

Hi Brendan. I'm afraid you are out of luck. There is no way to do this in the RH output without manually adding the numbers. My question though is why would you want to. This sort of thing is normally only required in printed documentation. If that is what you are actually trying to achieve then leave the RH books unnumbered and use your Word template styles to number the chapters when you generate the Word document.

Hi all

I stand to be corrected here, but wouldn't one be able to accomplish this by ensuring the topic titles contained the desired numbering? Then if one automatically generated the TOC, the numbers would be there in place?

Just a thought... Rick

Yes, but that would require manually numbering the topic titles which brings me back to the same problem.

Colum,

Thank you for the info. It isn't me who wants to specifically, but the staff using the manuals that wanted it to look like my old paper copies. If it was easy and not manual I would help them out, otherwise I'm doing as you suggested.

Thanks

Good call Rick. This would work although you'd have to delete and rebuild it each time a change was made.

Hi Colum

Not necessarily. Assuming this protocol was followed with naming, when one simply dragged a topic to the TOC, it would (should) pick up the Topic Title and plop it into place all nice and happy like.

Cheers... Rick

OK. If the topics have to be renamed as well as the TOC then you are stuck with the original idea.
