    Problems with blu-ray pop-up menus

    SupersoulVP Community Member

I made the mistake of tacking this question/problem onto another similar post, so here it is again for some:

I got this error message near the end of the disc build:

Blu-ray Error: "fatal error". Code: "6", Note: "Graphics buffer underflows.
- Failed to multiplex with maximum IG PTS: 54900000 (in 90kHz).

The blu-ray project I am working on is an 87 min live concert with about 8 other much shorter timelines.  The main menu has 6 buttons with a motion background.  There are few submenus as well, but the problem came when I started making pop-up menus for the various timelines.

This is the first project where I really had to explore the possibliltes and limitations of Encore's pop-up menus.  I burned a test disc with just a basic pop-up menu to see how the menu's opacity would look over the final video.  All the video assets were set to to transcode "Automatically".  All audio assets are blu-ray compliant Surround ac3's or 16-bit stereo WAV's so could be left as "Don't Transcode".  This disc burned perfectly.

I then went through the pretty involved process of making a final version of the main pop-up menus.  The main concert's pop-up menu has 5 pages (including page 0).  There are specific pop-up menus for other timelines, but those have no more than 2 pages.  None of the menus have more than 10 buttons.

I tried to burn the disc, and it came back with the error above.  After reading some other posts, I thought it was worth a try to delete the AuthorScriptHDMVSessions folder before starting a new burn since it was already filled with files from my test burn.  That didn't help.

Any insight or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks.

I thought it would help to get rid of one of those pages on the main  pop-up menu, to get the number down to 4.  This lead to the problem of  me not being able to link a pop-up menu button to another pop-up menu.   It seems like that is because you can only really set-up 1 pop-up menu  to any given timeline.

I remade the disc with a 4 page pop-up menu, but again that failed with the same error reported.  I also tried a burn where all the assets that had been transcoded during my initial test blu-ray were reverted back to original and allowed to transcode automatically (again). This also failed with the same error message

What did you name the disc?  If it's too long or contains spaces or non-alphanumeric characters, you can get this error.

            -Jeff

That's interesting since I do have an ampersand in the name.  The test disc that I burned with all the same video elements, but only a simple 1-page pop-up menu, had the exact same name, but burned successully.

I was about to give your suggestion a try, but ran into an even stranger problem.

All of my timelines in that project have video files in them that say they are offline.  Scrubbing through the timeline shows it as offline, but the video itself in the project is there.   I could just re-drag in the clips to the timelines, but then I lose a lot of chapter markers, that are all linked to various things.

This day must end.  See what tomorrow brings...

I finally had a chance to completey rebuild the project from scratch.  I decided to Save at the point when everything was setup except for having the pop-up menus, and then do a Save As and finish the build with the pop-up menus.  The disc name had the ampersand and spaces removed.

The build/burn of the version with pop-ups resulted in the same exact error message as before.

I opened the project that was sans pop-ups, saved a copy to preserve it, and its building right now.

Again, all of the video elements are being encoded in Encore using the "Automatic" setting.  The main timeline has a QT video asset that is 1920x1080, 23.976 fps, ProRes 4444.  The other video assets are ProRes (HQ) 422, either 23.976 or 29.97.  I thought that maybe this might have something to do with the disc not burning, but the initial test that I did had a simple 1 page pop-up menu, set on all the timelines, and everything worked.  The audio is all blu-ray compliant wav files/DD 5.1 ac3's.

I'll have to see how the build/burn with no pop-ups turns out, but could anybody please shed some light on what might be going on with this?

                  Thanks.

                    Hi,

I think this is a bug in CS5 that a pop up menu can not handle more than 15 video buttons with number of page limit to 5.

So if you are using video buttons, I recommend you to either decrease the number of buttons or user normal buttons.

Even normal buttons has a limit of 32 (I guess !) with 9 pages. So you will have to live with lesser number of pages in pop up menu with less number of buttons.

                    Thanks,

                    Ramesh.

                      Thanks for responding, Ramesh.

There are no "video" buttons in my entire project.  The main menu and the 3 sub-menus have motion backgrounds, but all buttons are just normal text with a little dash for a highlight layer.  This same style of button is what appears on the pop-up menus.

For the main pop-up menu, there are 5 pages, with 44 buttons total:

                      Page 0:     6 buttons

                      Page 1:     10 buttons

                      Page 2:     10 buttons

                      Page 3:     7 buttons

                      Page 4:     11 buttons

So you are thinking that I am way over some limit for buttons on a given pop-up menu?  32 or less?  I have also tried making the disc with a revised pop-up menu that only included page 0, 1, 2 and 3, but I guess that still wasn't under 32 for buttons.  That failed right at the end with the same "Graphics buffer underflows" error message.

The disc I burned with no pop-up menus worked... sort of.

There was an error message when I got in this morning that said:

                        Blu-ray Error: "device error", Code 3, Note: "AS_StorageError = -97071

The disc however opened in a blu-ray player and although I didn't watch too much of the disc, all menus and videos seemed to be working exactly as they should.

I was writing the disc to a BD-RE right after the other one failed.  I don't exactly trust the "Auto-Erase Rewritable Discs" check box.  There's been a few instances in the past where it seems like I needed to manually erase the disc (in Toast) before it was going to be able to write properly again.  If it wasn't super late already and I wasn't doing everything remotely from home, I probably would of done that before starting another build + burn.

                          Hi,

The device error code 3 may be due to damaged disc. This might be possible that you were using the same BD to write this project for many times.

Other than that the buffer underflow error is due to the more number of buttons that Encore supports. Decrease the number of buttons and use another BD(if the older one gives out the error you mentioned).

                          Thanks,

                          Ramesh.

Ramesh, is there documentation for this?  Or did you work this out through experience.

A post a while back suggested that Encore has applied the DVD spec limit for buttons (36/18) to bluray, even though the bluray specs would not require this.  Have you found this?  Any idea whether these various limits are related?

I trimmed out anything even remotely advanced in the pop-up menus, and I STILL get the cryptic "graphics buffer underflows" error message.

The main pop-up menu has 4 pages (including page 0) and only has 29 buttons total.  I went through all the menus and buttons to make sure everything was as it should be.  I noticed in the Encore User Guide, there is a graphic that shows page groups are supposed to be coded with more than just (#) at the start of their name, so something like (#2), even though if you "Add a Page" in Encore, it just comes up as (#).  Whatever, that didn't help anything either.

I had read in other posts (Adobe & Creative Cow) that linking a pop-up menu's button to "Resume" is basically useless, so I got rid of all of those on the pop-up menus.  Way back when I did the first test disc of this project with a simple one page test pop-up menu, I made a button link to "Resume".  When I pressed that button on the burned disc, nothing happened.  I just dismissed it as nothing since I was going to make at least a couple other test burns to actually see what the final pop-ups and other menu pages were really going to do, but then never got another disc to burn properly after that.

I have done a couple complete rebuilds of the project, and some incremental Save As's to preserve something at least if the project goes sideways again.  I have now been given (and therefore need to include) a Stereo PCM wav file with the main feature.  It seemed like the perfect opportunity to add a page to the main menu so this option could be set while keeping the motion background & its audio playing seemlessly.  I don't think it will work since setting the Default for that menu to "Active Audio Track", which is on the second page of the menu, seems doomed to fail.

I would appreciate any insight as to what to try next, especially if you have made a successful blu-ray with multiple page pop-up menus and an audio setup page.

                              Thanks.

After countless tests and research, I finally have a successfully burned blu-ray with WORKING multi-page pop-up menus (that I am happy with).  Thank you to all the people who gave theoretical guidance and suggestions in emails and other posts.  There has been no shortage of oddities and obstacles to overcome when just trying to make a simple blu-ray.  Unfortunately,  I did not have the time to accurately pinpoint what was causing the original error message.  The project just needed to get done.

The main pop-up menu has 4 pages, with 13 buttons on each page.  Only about 5 - 9 of the "buttons" on each page are actual buttons that link anywhere.  The other buttons on each page only serve as the remaining pieces of the menu's background and cannot be accessed on the final disc.  Totally ridiculous way to make the backgrounds for pop-up menus, but it works.

Some of the other things I learned regarding pop-up menus + Encore misc:

                                1.  If at all possible, totally create a menu .psd BEFORE bringing it into an Encore project.  Make the button order in the .psd what you want it to end up being in the end (bottom layer is button 1).  If you start editing and saving order after it has been brought in, Encore will almost always revert it back to some strange (possibly original) button order.  You will spend all your time re-routing button navigation and changing their numbers, only to find out later that Encore has changed it all back without notice.

                                2.  As many people state, it is best to have Encore do as little thinking as possible.  All of my button groups originally had Text Layers within them with some fx applied.  I merged each text layer down into that button's background layer to essentially rasterize the text with the fx applied.  Each (+) button group therefore only had a higlight layer and a background layer.  After doing this for all the buttons, the .psd file size was greatly reduced.  Naturally I saved a copy before going through the merging process in case I ever had to go back and edit the text.

                                3.  Originally the background for the pop-up menus were made from a rectangle cut-out of the background of the main menu.  This was the width of the frame and around 1/5 of the height.  I had changed the opacity to around 60%, and cut up the pieces to go with their respective buttons.  For the final disc, I just made a shape with the Rounded Rectangle Tool, and filled it with a solid colour.  It is probably only about half the size of the original pop-up menu's background.  I changed its opacity as well, but then merged it with a blank layer so Encore didn't have to think about the opacity setting.

                                4.  I encoded all the video elements BEFORE they were brought into the project.  There are some issues with the way the file sizes are interpretted by Encore, but I won't trust it to encode anything again.

                                5.  For some reason Encore wants to transcode 16-bit, 48.0 kHz .aiff files when making a blu-ray, but 16-bit, 48.0 kHz .wav files do NOT need trancoding (for both dvds and blu-rays).
