I have been using Adobe Reader X, Reader 9 and Acrobat X with OS X 10.6.6 and it works absolutely fine. Can you provide more details. Are you using Admin/Standard account or some other account. Have you tried changing permissions in your MAC. One suggestion is why not try a permission repair to your disk and then install Reader.
The first impression from what you are saying looks like you don't have correct permissions in your disc but this is just a guess. Try permission repair and let us know the result.
