    Adobe Reader X fails to install on Windows 7 Home 64-bit - ARG ! ! !

    LionelBDyck

This is the exact same problem as with Adobe Reader 9 and 9.1 that has been reported.

The install begins and gets to a point where it attempts to uninstall the prior release and gets a 1402 can not open registry and then backs out. I was hoping that this would have been resolved with Adobe Reader X but sadly the challenge still exists.

I've tried everything suggested in the forums with no success on 64-bit. I was successful on Windows 7 Home 32-bit with a test case provided by Adobe support which also failed on 64-bit.

      Please fix this.

      Thanks

      ------------Lionel

It would help if you posted the full message, including the keys that cannot be opened.

Thanks for the link - I've tried EVERYTHING in that link plus several others without success.

            The error is:

Error 1402 Could not open key:

            HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE32\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MSFS

Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

I then tried the following without success:

            1. boot into safe mode

            2. delete the \program files x(86)\adobe\reader 9 folder

               - the resources\cmap would not delete

            3. delete the \program files x(86)\common ...\adobe\reader

            4. using regedit delete any key that mentioned acrobat

               -  some would not allow me to delete them

                - the above mentioned key does not exist

            5. Remove the any key for Adobe Reader 9

Then tried the install of Acrobat Reader X again with the exact same result

Did you try giving yourself full control on this registry itself. Do you always get the problem on same registry or different regist

              ry.

You can try following links as well. Worked for me.

              http://www.completepcpedia.com/occurs.html

              or

you can may be log-in as Built-in Administrator and then try this.  If your administrator  account isn't enabled, search for enable administrator for your version  of Windows.

*Thank you.  We've tried that several times without any success.  Right now

we have Adobe Reader 7 installed.  Trying to upgrade to Adobe Reader 8 or 9

or X results in the same error.

Hi can you try the following:

                  1. Download Microsoft's SubinACL tool from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe -4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en

                  2. Install the same by double clicking on the "subinacl.msi" just downloaded.

                  3. Open Command Prompt window through the Run Dialog Box (Start -> type "cmd". In the section above you should be able to see a command.exe. Right click on the same and select Run As Administrator)

                  4. In the Command Prompt window, type in the following commands:

                      i. cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" (Hit Enter)

                     ii. subinacl  /subkeyreg  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents /grant=administrators=f /grant=SYSTEM=f /grant=USERS=f  /grant="Creator Owner"=f (Hit Enter)

Try installing Adobe Reader X now. Hopefully it should work now.

Ankit: you should really use code blocks when giving typing or copy/paste instructions.  This forum software keeps inserting random blanks and/or linefeeds into normal text, so when the user copied your instructions, the blanks were copied as well; thus the command failed.

                      Example:

                      1. Download Microsoft's SubinACL tool from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe -4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en

                      2. Install the same by double clicking on the "subinacl.msi" just downloaded.

                      3. Open Command Prompt window through the Run Dialog Box (Start -> type  "cmd". In the section above you should be able to see a command.exe.  Right click on the same and select Run As Administrator)

                      4. In the Command Prompt window, type in the following commands:
                        1. cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
                        2. subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents /grant=administrators=f /grant=SYSTEM=f /grant=USERS=f /grant="Creator Owner"=f

The 'i' and 'ii' in the list above will probably be replaced by the forum software by something else (possibly 'a' and 'b') when I click the Post button.
