1. Re: Running Headers for 2 paragraph styles
Eugene Tyson Jan 13, 2011 9:17 AM (in response to Buzz81)Use Character Styles.
A paragraph style is used for all text within the same paragraph.
A character style is used to style individual characters. In this case the two running head variables are classed as two individual characters within a paragraph.
Creating a paragraph style applies the same style to both characters. So don't apply a para style, apply different Character Styles to each character (variable)

2. Re: Running Headers for 2 paragraph styles
Buzz81 Jan 13, 2011 10:02 AM (in response to Eugene Tyson)Thanks for the reply, but this doesn't work. When I try to define the Running Header (through Edit Text Variable), the Style line says None or New Character Style. Unlike the Running Header (Paragraph Style) type, it does not link the Running Header to a paragraph style. Maybe I miscommunicated what I'm trying to accomplish.

3. Re: Running Headers for 2 paragraph styles
Dog of War Jan 13, 2011 10:23 AM (in response to Buzz81)Make a new Text Variable, say H2, based on the Running Header one. Apply Running Header to your first para style and H2 to your second para style. Insert them both on master page.

4. Re: Running Headers for 2 paragraph styles
Buzz81 Jan 13, 2011 11:09 AM (in response to Dog of War)It took me awhile to figure out the steps that you described, but it worked! For anyone else reading the post, here are the idiot-proof steps for novices and dumb guys like myself:
1. Go the the text box on the master page where you want to insert the dual running headers.
2. Go to Type-Text Variables-Define and click "New."
3. Assign the name ("H2" in my example), assign Running Header (Paragraph Style) to Type, and Heading 2 to Style.
4. Insert the Running Header assigned to Heading 1 in the text box (Type-Text Variable-Insert Variable-Running Header).
5. Next to it, insert the new H2 variable in the text box (Type-Text Variable-Insert Variable-H2).
Now it works! Thanks!!

5. Re: Running Headers for 2 paragraph styles
Harbs. Jan 13, 2011 11:26 AM (in response to Buzz81)You need to create a second variable definition.
Type > Text Variables > Define... and click on the "New" button...

6. Re: Running Headers for 2 paragraph styles
Buzz81 Jan 13, 2011 11:38 AM (in response to Harbs.)That's step 2 above. I didn't define a variance for Heading 1 - I just inserted a Running Header tied to Heading 1 and it worked.
