1. Re: How to capture HD footage in On Location for Final Cut Pro
Mark Mapes Jan 24, 2011 12:49 PM (in response to csterny)The .xmp file contains only metadata. Clips recorded by OnLocation have an extension of .mov, .avi, or .m2t.
What kind of camera are you shooting with? When you say HD, do you mean DVCPRO HD or HDV or some other format?

csterny Jan 24, 2011 1:13 PM (in response to Mark Mapes)Oh excuse me, it was .m2t not xmp. The camera is a canon Xh-A1 HDV.
Thanks for the quick reply!

3. Re: How to capture HD footage in On Location for Final Cut Pro
Mark Mapes Jan 24, 2011 2:54 PM (in response to csterny)Okay, since we're talking about .m2t HDV clips, then what exactly do you mean by "I cannot select the .mov when shooting HD"? Is there really a .mov clip, or did you mean .m2t? Regardless, are you able to play the HDV clips in OnLocation?
As for Final Cut, how are you trying to import it and what error, if any, do you get?

4. Re: How to capture HD footage in On Location for Final Cut Pro
csterny Jan 24, 2011 5:09 PM (in response to Mark Mapes)Ok, I'll my best to explain this. I connect my canon XH-A1 camera to the
computer and open up On Location. It opens just fine and I record and
capture HD footage just fine. The capture settings are set to store the
footage on an external Hard Drive. I open the Hard drive and can see the
footage captured in the correct folders. For example it looks something like
this: clip 01.m2t
clip 01.xmp
clip 02.m2t
clip 02.xmp
...and so on.... for all
my captured clips
I open up final cut pro and go file - import - files - Hard Drive- On
Location clips - clip 01.m2t...... all of the clips are grayed and I am not
allowed to select any of them. So I tried to capture footage in .mov instead
of m2t. I clicked on a small tab in On Location and it brought up recording
file format. I had a choice between either quicktime (all frames) or
Quicktime (flagged frames only). These two options were also grayed out and
I wasn't able to choose them. I opened a new project and set my camera to
standard definition instead of HD. I was able to select quicktime (all
frames) and captured the footage in .mov and imported it just fine in Final
Cut Pro. It worked great and easy in Standard def but I couldn't get it to
work in HD. I hope that helps. Thanks for helping me.

5. Re: How to capture HD footage in On Location for Final Cut Pro
Mark Mapes Jan 24, 2011 5:24 PM (in response to csterny)I can solve one mystery nice and quick: when the video stream is HDV, the only recording option in OnLocation is M2T. That's why the two Recording File Format options are grayed out. [We debated whether to show "M2T" in the Recording File Format sub-menu, making it available and selected when the source is HDV, but we obviously decided not to do so.]
Are you able to play the .M2T clips in OnLocation?
I don't have any clue why the m2t clips show as unavailable in FCP. If OnLocation is open, then perhaps it makes FCP think that the clips are in use, but that's just a wild guess. To determine whether that's related, try closing OL or switching to another project before trying to import the clips into FCP. Also, have you tried dragging-and-dropping the clips from a Finder window to the FCP window. That how I always did it when I was testing interoperability with FCP.

6. Re: How to capture HD footage in On Location for Final Cut Pro
csterny Jan 24, 2011 8:16 PM (in response to Mark Mapes)Alright started all over and did everything you said. No Luck. When I tried
dragging and dropping it said error unknown file. Than I tried just double
clicking on it in my external HD and it didn't have an application to play
it, I tried searching the computer for an app opening it with On Location
and that didn't work. I can only play the clip in On Location when the
project it was created in is open. I don't think final cut pro supports
.m2t. I am working on a Macbook Pro by the way.

7. Re: How to capture HD footage in On Location for Final Cut Pro
Mark Mapes Jan 25, 2011 9:00 AM (in response to csterny)What version of OnLocation are you running? Please include the full version info from the About box. It should look something like "5.0.1.018m" (which is the most current).
I ask because there was a bug in CS4.0.2 involving certain OL-recorded content not opening in FCP (or QT). I don't recall exactly which format was involved, but it was fixed in 4.0.3.

9. Re: How to capture HD footage in On Location for Final Cut Pro
Mark Mapes Jan 25, 2011 10:02 AM (in response to csterny)Well, there's a newer version, 5.0.1, available as a free update. While it's not likely to fix this issue, I recommend updating. Since you're shooting HDV, I should note that the 5.0.1 patch may introduce a bug specific to HDV, which would require you to disable the webcam.
As for the problem you're experiencing with HDV clips recorded by OL, I'm running out of troubleshooting questions. Only one more comes to mind: can you import the HDV clips into Premiere Pro?

11. Re: How to capture HD footage in On Location for Final Cut Pro
csterny Jan 25, 2011 10:28 AM (in response to Mark Mapes)correction it will import to Premiere Pro. I looked up online and I guess no
one can import m2t files into FCP. Why doesn't it allow capturing in
Quicktime, do you think this option will ever come about?
Thanks for the help

12. Re: How to capture HD footage in On Location for Final Cut Pro
Mark Mapes Jan 25, 2011 11:24 AM (in response to csterny)Darn. I should've known that FCP doesn't work with HDV. But then again, I haven't been directly involved in interoperability testing for a few years.
I'm not qualified to speak on why we write HDV only to .m2t files or whether it's possible to wrap it in .mov. [Since FCP shoehorns just about anything and everything into QuickTime, I presume it's technically feasible...] Anyway, I'll add a feature request to our database. Regardless of whether or when that change is implemented, you can transcode the .m2t clips to .mov (or many other formats) through Adobe Media Encoder. You can even set up watch folders to manage the transcoding process. If you go that route, I suggest that you either disable the Start Queue Automatically in order to keep AME from competing for CPU and HDD read/write or, if your system can handle both OL recording and AME transcoding, then set the auto-start interval to much less than the default of 2 minutes (otherwise, if you're recording short clips, the AME timer will keep getting reset every time you finish a clip.) Or, you could avoid all of this by editing in Premiere Pro...
