I have to plead ignorance, as I have never used the Motion Tracking Mode in PrE.I always use the Track Matte Keying.
Perhaps Steve Grisetti has done a tutorial on using Motion Tracking in PrE, and has it on Muvipix, along with his other great articles, starting with the Basic Training series, through his Tips & Tricks articles. Or, maybe a PrE Motion Tracking expert will stop by with the full instructions. I just do not know that function.
Good luck, and hope that the Project is progressing for you.
Here is one Muvipix THREAD on Motion Tracker. Maybe something useful there?
Also, his Cool Tricks #29 looks promising. What I do not know is if that is available other than to subscribers. As I am auto-logged in as a subscriber, I cannot tell, but you might want to check that out on Muvipix too. BTW - with just the download of some of the "free-to-subscribers" content, one has paid for a subscription.
Oh -- its progressing alright! I have ended up using the title feature and adding an arrow over the player when I need to "point him out"... its not a perfect solution --- but with the time constraints and my low-patience threshold, it is perfectly fine for this situation.
I have finished editing out all of the plays from 27 games, have added those arrows, and am in the process of figuring out some other effects, possibly
That "arrow method" is one that I cover in this ARTICLE. It can be very effective, and takes far less work than the Track Matte Keying of various Effects. The latter can be very powerful, visually, but does require more work to accomplish.
Good luck, and do check out Muvipix. Lot of good articles, threads, Assets, and more, plus there are a lot of great people, who do not hang out here. Their Community is more varied, and many do not use much Adobe in their various workflows, so it's a great resource, when working outside of the Adobe programs. There are also several subscribers, who to a lot of academic athletic work, so they know some neat tricks.
