I can not copy the table caption in the above pdf. If I do so, I will get some gibberish, such as %"/*&+%",-.%&1",/*%9&,*09%&
I'm wondering what happens to the pdf file. Is there a way to fix it so that I can copy the text?
Does anybody know what cause the problem and how to fix it? The current walkaround is to convert the pdf into image, then load the image into acrobat and perform OCR. But this is tedious and some information may be lost. I'm wondering if there is a better solution.

GKaiseril Jan 31, 2011 3:15 PM (in response to asdfabcedasf)Since you have to OCR the PDF, there is no true text in the PDF just a scanned image like a Tiff or Jpeg image of a page with text. Think photograph of a page and not a typed page.

Bill@VT Jan 31, 2011 11:26 PM (in response to asdfabcedasf)I would venture to guess that you do not have the fonts used on your system and the font that is substituted by your system is not compatible.

Do you have the font on your system? Can you copy the text correctly?

7. Re: Can not copy text from a pdf file
Bill@VT Feb 1, 2011 12:22 PM (in response to asdfabcedasf)It says the font is Calibri, even when I select the font with the text touchup tool. However, I change to Arial and get the same response of garbage characters in the upper prose section. If I change back to Calibri I get the same results as the Arial. Apparently the Calibri on my system is different than is what is used int he document. To copy, you have to have the fonts on your system or something equivalent. In my case, the equivalent looks like junk (it actually says Calibri in WORD). Apparently the fonts that are being used are not standard fonts.

Thank you for checking it.
I don't quite understand how Acrobat handles foots. If the font encodeing is non standard, why the text appears correctly? Is there a document that explains how it works?

9. Re: Can not copy text from a pdf file
Bill@VT Feb 1, 2011 8:22 PM (in response to asdfabcedasf)The font is embedded and that is used for display. However, the font is apparently a different version than the one in Windows. Thus a problem when doing a copy.
