You might have clicked one of the anchor points in the vector object, thus turning it into a path. If you want to resize it with handles at anytime, just click the object and press Q on your keyboard.
Thanks Joey! I'll keep 'Q' in mind (i forget what mode that is, but the shortcut sounds familiar).

Are you referring to the blue boxes? Or something else? Clicking on them w/out resizing turns it into a Path?
Ahh sorry for the confusion Robert. By "anchor" I meant "point" or "corner point". But yeah, the blue boxes more or less. If you click a vector object with the white pointer (sub selection tool) you'll see the points, if you then click into one of the point you can manipulate it in a variety of ways. Do so will turn your object into a path.
