Then place my camera accordingly to match their view, and maybe add some sugar on top of it.

I have not looked at the video copilot tutorials.
Looks to me like two simple applications of CC Sphere, one for the global image, one for the atmosphere image at a slightly smaller diameter. The glow in the background looks static. The effect on the marketing company's page does not even appear to be built on a 3D stage with a camera.
The situation is complicated by a need to loop and it's impossible to loop seamlessly so a way of disguising the start point must be created.
*ugh* That example is utterly awful. Still, as the others said, it's easily possible to create a globe using multiple layers of CC Sphere, the Circle effect, Glow and a decent texture and indeed Andrew K's tutorial should get you on your way.
