    Overwrite Audio when Pasting?

    Typhoon859 Community Member

Whenever I paste something, I usually need it as a replacement for whatever I might want to paste it over.  Instead, I have to paste, then delete, then guess the extra amount I deleted/need to further delete to correct the times the rest of the audio starts.

Same goes for the opposite.  When I delete something, how do I make it just leave a gap instead of having it filled with whatever is in front?  Thanks guys

Does anybody post any replies here or is this forum completely pointless?  Seeing this simple question over two weeks later still not answered really pisses me off.  Sorry but that's just ridiculous.  I hate this stupid program.

Hey, I don't blame your anger. But don't get mad at the many unpaid volunteers in these forums. These are give and take forums... so you should expect to give back as well. Have you?

Still, it is a terrible shame that Adobe support is so bad that they exploit and rely on all the unpaid volunteers to do their job. When was the last time any of us have seen an official posting by an Adobe support representative in ANY of these forums?

What can we do? Stop using their products? Kind of difficult when they are pretty much the only game in town.

There is always the paid for support, which is expensive... but I have paid for support and in my experience, it is only marginally better than non-paid support.

Anyhow, a few suggestions to your questions:

            >Whenever I paste something, I usually need it as a replacement for whatever I might want to paste it over.

            >Instead, I have to paste, then delete, then guess the extra amount I deleted/need to further delete to correct the times the rest of the audio starts.

I am not sure I understand. There are several ways to paste.

            1. If you are replacing, mark the section (you want to erase/replace) then paste what is in your paste buffer. What you marked will be overwritten.

If the section you are pasting is larger than the section you are replacing, the additional amount will become inserted.

            2. If you want to insert, simply click on the area where you want to insert audio and paste. Everything to the right will automatically move forward in time.

            3. Then there is the paste mix... but you are not asking about that.

            >Same goes for the opposite.  When I delete something, how do I make it just leave a gap instead of having it filled with whatever is in front?

Mark the audio section and click on the volume floater toolbar and drag the mouse down (lowering the volume to -96db effectively erases the audio).

I hope I was able to help.

Unpaid volunteer... also with unanswered questions.

I'm not mad at you guys.  I was mad at the actual support of Adobe.  That's why I mentioned my hatred towards the program because it essentially becomes nothing without any sort of support.  This is just pathetic for an official Adobe forum.

Anyway, all of what you mentioned I sorta figured.  There's no way to accurately highlight exactly the portion that needs to be replaced with whatever is being pasted.  So, regardless, everything gets pushed forward/back in time which is the problem.  I now make a new track, paste it there, and lower that part to -96 in the original.  Then I merge the tracks.  So inefficient...  I will try out Audition soon and I'm hoping that program isn't as stupid...  I have a feeling that it will be; it'll just have more stuff, not better functionality.  Thanks for the response though - I appreciate it.

Also, there is a subtle difference in highlighting a part and deleting it vs. lowering the volume to nothing, nevermind efficiency.  That's why I need a way where everything will remain a place.  I can easily do that in Adobe Premiere.  There is a clear option and a delete option and two different insert options as well.  Maybe this program is just that bad that you can't do it.  I would've found it by now...

Audition will give you the option of Muting a selected portion of the audio without deleting the time. Also Mix Paste gives you options to Mix, Replace or Insert at different Levels/Phase/LR Balance.
