I would be very grateful for any advice or suggestions : I recently purchased a new Nikon D5000 and Elements 8. Everybody in my camera club tells me to shoot in RAW. My question is do I need additional software to open a RAW file in 8, or will elements 8 automatically recognise the RAW file ? As an old film photographer, finding my way round digital is a whole new learning curve, so any help really appreciated. Thanks in advance Phil
Nikon D5000 support was added in Camera Raw 5.4. According to the updates pages, Photoshop Elements 8 will support Camera Raw updates from 5.6 up to 6.2. I don't know which version of Camera Raw comes with Elements 8, but I'm guessing it's 5.5 which should support the D5000. So, if it doesn't already support the D5000, it certainly will after a free update. You may be able to update Elements over the internet using an Update option in the Help menu.
Alternatively, you can download updates here:
Whether raw is right for you, only you can say. It introduces a significant extra step into a finished image, but most of us here would argue that it's more than worth it. Think of the difference between processing your own prints from negatives, and shooting slide film.
Hi YammerP Thankyou for your response, I will follow your advice. Kind regards Phil
