1. Re: Disturbance and Sharp edges when using brush tool.
Noel Carboni Feb 14, 2011 6:02 AM (in response to NinBuu)If you're seeing the same kinds of problems with OpenGL both disabled and enabled, I suggest it might be a color profile problem. How did you create your current monitor color profile?
Try temporarily setting the monitor color profile to the standard sRGB profile. Does the smoothness return?

Noel Carboni Feb 14, 2011 7:55 AM (in response to NinBuu)Can you plesae also look at what's in the Devices tab of your Color Management dialog? That's where you'll see any specific profile for your monitor (which, for example, could have come in when the monitor was first installed).

5. Re: Disturbance and Sharp edges when using brush tool.
Noel Carboni Feb 14, 2011 8:08 AM (in response to NinBuu)You have a profile listed in the Profiles associated with this device section. You'll want to remove that in order to get the system to use sRGB.
I wonder if this could also be a matter of your needing to update your display drivers from nVidia.com... Do you have the latest (January 18, 2011, version 266.58)?

NinBuu Feb 14, 2011 8:13 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)Nah! I have the latest video drivers, version 266.58. But even if you say that, the problem has been there since the time i got this new pc. I dint realize that because i dint use brush tool after getting the new pc, but after 3 months when i finally chose my brush tool and used it, i saw this problem. I think that was in november. I got the new pc in August.

7. Re: Disturbance and Sharp edges when using brush tool.
Noel Carboni Feb 14, 2011 8:39 AM (in response to NinBuu)Like I said, try removing that monitor profile so the system will default to sRGB.
If you don't want to remove it, you can add sRGB to that list and make it the default, checking [ ] Use my settings.
The sRGB profile might not be a good match to your monitor, but it will prove whether the Samsung provided profile is bad. It happens.

NinBuu Feb 14, 2011 8:46 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)That didnt work. I removed that profile and restarted pc but dint wo
rk. So i added an sRGB IEC61996-2.1 and made it default. But that dint work too.

9. Re: Disturbance and Sharp edges when using brush tool.
Noel Carboni Feb 14, 2011 8:57 AM (in response to NinBuu)Wow, I would have bet money that would have made a difference. You might want to add the monitor profile you had back in.
The only other thing I can imagine is that somehow your display is set to an oddball color depth...
Check this:
- Right-click on the desktop and choose Screen Resolution.
- In the Screen Resolution dialog, click the Advanced Settings link.
- In the monitor properties dialog that comes up, in the Adapter tab click the [ List All Modes ] button.
- Is the current (highlighted) mode a True Color mode?
Beyond this I can't begin to imagine what could be up with your display.
Do you see the same kind of graininess in other aspects of the Photoshop display - for example gradients rendered with the Gradient tool?

10. Re: Disturbance and Sharp edges when using brush tool.
NinBuu Feb 14, 2011 9:02 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)Thank god you dint bet.
I added the Monitor profile back. Yeah i have "True Color" Selected/highlighted.
No grains in gradients but there are patches, ubt thats normal coz i have an lcd display. But there are no grains in gradients or when i erase the brush tool. It seems its only a problem with the brush tool in photoshop. I can bet that its not my monitor problem because As you can see corel painter doesnt sprout such problem when using brushes (although i think thats coz the tools properties are different in both softwares).

12. Re: Disturbance and Sharp edges when using brush tool.
Noel Carboni Feb 14, 2011 9:43 AM (in response to NinBuu)Wow, I should have tried duplicating what you did a litte harder first instead of sending you on that wild goose chase... It occurred to me to try 8 bits/channel, and sure enough I'm seeing dithering too, when brushing on 8 bits/channel images, even though I have Use Dither turned off in the Edit - Color Settings... menu.
Try this: Change your image to 16 bits/channel mode and let us know if see smooth results.
When retouching/editing, I exclusively work in 16 bits/channel mode myself, which is why I hadn't noticed that the soft edges on the brushes dither like that.

13. Re: Disturbance and Sharp edges when using brush tool.
Chris Cox Feb 14, 2011 10:04 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)Yes, 8 bit brush masks are dithered to prevent banding in low opacity areas.
I think that goes back to Photoshop 2.

14. Re: Disturbance and Sharp edges when using brush tool.
Chris Cox Feb 14, 2011 10:05 AM (in response to Chris Cox)The fact that a 1/2 bit dither is visible means that you've applied an extreme adjustment to the result, or that something is very wrong with your display profile (and it is applying an extreme adjustment).
