This opens just a new window within that Illustrator instance. The windows are trapped within that illustrator instance. Disadvantage: just half the size of one monitor when viewed in parallel. Better: fullscreen window for each monitor => much easier handling.

I honestly don't know. That would correct the issue on the Mac though.

OK. So if I understand you correctly, from CS4 on multiple separate windows are possible, but that are no real instances.
