Exporting HD as .mov (Quicktime) in CS4

    seiurus Community Member

I use Premiere Pro CS4 on a PC.  The only choices for exporting using Quicktime are DV formats.  I have been told that by buying Quicktime 7 Pro, I would be able to find some codecs to export HD footage as .mov.  (Of course, .H264 is alread offered, but the compression is too great for my purposes).  Does anyone have any experience with this?  Specifically, by downloading Quicktime 7 Pro, do HD choices magically appear in the menu when Quicktime is chosen as Premiere's export format?

Which Apple CODEC do you wish to use? That might point you to either the CODEC, or to a program that will produce it.

QT Pro does have a lot of Export settings, so that might do what you want, with but an intermediate file, if that CODEC does not appear in the PrPro list.

            Good luck,

I see that Rod has posted his list of Apple CODEC's, with CS3 and QT Pro. Here is my drop-down with PrPro 2.0 and QT Pro:

Thank you.  Looks like I need to get Quicktime Pro.  You are using a PC, aren't you?

Thanks for taking the time to show me this stuff.  I have to get Quicktime Pro now.  You are using a PC, aren't you?

                    Steve,

Both RoboDog and I are on PC's. That screen-cap is from my laptop, and I have a few more (added after QT Pro) on the workstation, but those are the main ones.

Not knowing exactly what you are doing, I cannot recommend an exact CODEC, but can say that the Apple Animation has worked very well for me. I buy quite a few 3D animations (until RoboDog gets up to speed with Maya... ) from artists on the Mac. My uses are all SD, to date, and the Animation CODEC works great on my PC's.

For certain subjects, Jeff Bellune likes the Apple Photo JPEG, and others like ProRes. I'd definitely test with those three, and see if you like one, better than the others. Not sure if you might run into incompatibility issues, if you are doing intermediates, going to another program, or if you are sharing to others, who might not have the proper CODEC, but that can be addressed after you find the CODEC, that does the best job for your material.

                    Good luck,

I like animation codec....but they are large files ( byte count)

I'm probably gonna be in the big happy hunting grounds in the sky long before I get proficient at maya animation for you Bill

oh ...one more note:  another plus for getting the QT pro

in some cases ( when having weird problems with using some stuff natively in PP for example ) QT Pro has some nice export abilities of its own....

sometimes it works well with other things like handbrake etc to do "workaround" type things

I will be sending HD wildlife footage to a stock footage company that is a "Mac shop". I need the best quality .mov files I can give them.  Thanks again for all the help.

                          Steve,

I'd test those three mentioned CODEC's first, but do not rule out the others just yet. As Rod mentions, Animation CODEC will give you large files. For the stock agency, quality should take center stage, but they might have some limitations, and can help you out with making the final choice.

I have a close friend (though not close geographically), who also does a lot of stock wildlife work, and has added video to his submissions. He shoots Canons and is no a Mac, and I will ask him what he provides his agencies, and see if he has some recs. that he can offer. Agencies can have different requirements, but that might get you in the ballpark, and then you can study the output and make a final determination.

Good luck, and as Rod mentions, QT Pro does have a pretty good Export capability. That was why I first upgraded to Pro, many years ago. In a worst case instance, as mentioned above, one could Export an intermediate, and the Open and Export with QT Pro. However, that IS one additonal step, and choosing a great intermediate format/CODEC, that QT Pro can handle and Export from, might require much more testing.

                            ------------

However, that IS one additonal step, and choosing a great intermediate  format/CODEC, that QT Pro can handle and Export from, might require much  more testing.

plus put a lot of gray hair on your head....

suggestion: shrink your work area bar down to some small sample of your most "difficult" part of video ( lots of movement, transitions, time lapse...whatever )  ...so you export only small sample of your "test"....from PP....or you end up sometimes waiting for results that end up not being good and curse yourself for wasting so much time processing stuff ...

For some stupid reason I do that a LOT.... waste time cause I forgot to just do a sample of small area.

                              Bill,

I'm having one more problem.  Can you perhaps help me.  I bought Quicktime Pro and downloaded it.  I cannot find any confirmation that it is on my computer, but the Apple people assure me that it's there.  When I go into Export on Premiere CS4, chosing Quicktime still only offers the DV choices for codec.  I have restarted the computer several times.  Shouldn't this stuff automatically show up in PPro?

                              Thanks

                                Steve,

Unless things have changed, QT Player has all of the attributes of QT Pro, but many are locked. You should have received an e-mail with a Key, to unlock those attributes. That is entered into QT Player via Edit>Preferences>Register. There, you will see a box with either you Key, or a place to enter your Key. Historically, QT Pro has been good for the entire run of the series of players, so if you bought and registered QT Pro at version 7.0.0 (just an example), you could update QT Pro through 7.9.9, and all would be good. When they reach version 8.0.0, one would need to buy/register for Pro, that would last through that entire cycle. That has been the case since QT Pro 5.x.x, and I have upgraded at 6.x.x and 7.x.x. On the laptop, I am up to 7.6.9, but am still on 7.5.5 on the workstation - until I test all aspects of 7.6.9 completely. 7.5.5 was my previous, "last known good" version.

At Edit>Preferences>Register, what do you see? Did you get the confirming e-mail with a Key?

Sorry that I cannot be of more help there.

                                Good luck,
