    Problem maintaining avi quality

I am very new to adobe premiere elements 9 and trying to makes some videos. My issue is I use FRAPS to record AVI format videos and they cap out at 1min segments due to the storage requirement. They average around 4gb. I want to combine these segments into one solid video and do some adjustments to make it a nice one. My issue is when I create a new project all the preset settings are interlaced and poor quality. When I drag the avi clips into the program their quality goes down and they become even worse after rendering the movie. How can I keep the quality of the original clips for the final video? I looked over the different choices, even HDV but whenever I render the video is either fuzzy or interlaced causing it to have poor quality. Any help would be great.
