    NIK Silver Efex Pro 2 hangs CS5 W/100% CPU Win 7 64bit

    Ed 45ACP Community Member

I'm running Win 7 64bit and CS5 64bit and it works fine until I load Silver Efex Pro 2 then CS5 hangs and CPU is @ 100%. I have to force close CS5.

I also have SEP 1 and that works without a problem.

I also run XP Pro SP2 on a completely different hard drive that get switched in and out with my Win 7 hard drive, NOTE these two OS's are not in the system at the same time (sorry but some on these forum get confused about that), and run CS5 32bit on that install and SEP runs fine on that OS and CS5 32bit.

What could cause this. I will be contacting NIK tomorrow about this problem.

      Anyone else haviing this problem?

      Thanks.

When a 3rd party plug-in doesn't work with Photoshop, it's pretty clearly the fault of the 3rd party plug-in.  Adobe makes the rules regarding how to interface plug-ins to Photoshop.

Did Nik respond?  I believe that's your only avenue to resolution at this point.

            Gee Thanks.

I was posting here to see if anyone else has had this problem. Not looking for Adobe to do anything. I fully know it is a problem with SEP2/Win7 64bit/CS5 64bit on Win7 64bit.

The only thing I can think of is IF NIK uses this one service for licensing, I don't remember the name of it and I'm not at home right now . I also have a piece of OnOne software installed and that also installs this licensing service and I have shut it down. Could be since it is set to manual, instead of auto start, that SEP2 is looking for that to check the license of the software. Most all services will start if they are needed when set to manual. This service won't. If I want to run the OnOne plugin I have to manually start this service before I call up the plugin. After installing SEP2 I noticed that this service was once again set to Auto Start and running so I shut it down again. I'll  try reinstalling SEP2 and let that service run and see if it hangs PS.

Really Noel I appreciate your reply but really like I don't know it is a problem with SEP2. I am not stupid and have been using, configuring, fixing mine and other people PC's for YEARS.

And no NIK hasn't responded because I haven't contacted them yet. Haven't had the time.

You act as though you know all this, yet you've just admitted you haven't bothered to contact the ONE entity that could actually fix the problem you're having.

And it's not like I got in the way of anyone else answering.  In fact, I did you a favor by popping your thread to the top of the list, as I have just done again.  Gee, you're welcome.

Those licensing services you're trying to think of may be Nalpeiron and/or FlexNet.  I have no idea what Nik uses.  What makes you think you can turn off these services and still use the software you bought?

No promises.  I'm just trying to help, and I'm not going to try to remember a list of people who are beyond help.

Well that's just it. None of your posts to any of the threads I have ask for help in have been of any help. If anything they are condescending, like the last one.

And I see most of your posts have this same tone.

So please refrain from replying to my posts.

                    Thanks.

                      Not helpful?

In this thread alone you asked whether anyone had seen a problem.  I bumped the thread back to the top so it would be seen more.  Yes, I really did think about that when I made my first response in this thread, which otherwise had 0 responses and had fallen off the first page.  It was a "matter of fact" response, intended for you and future readers, no condescension intended.

You asked about licensing services and I named them.

But these things are not helpful in your opinion.  No "thanks for the information" or even "thanks for your response".  Just a "Gee Thanks" with an attitude.

Unlike you, when you address me, I respond.  I asked you a question, but you ignored it.

And now guess what?  I don't particularly feel like doing you a favor and trying to remember that you would prefer me not to respond to your comments.  Tell you what:  You continue to post when and where you want, and I'll do the same.

                        Hey thanks

I got my answer over at the NIK forum. There seems to be a few people that are having problems with SEP 2 on Win7 64 and PS CS4/5 64.

                          Link?

I just installed SEP2 Trial and find it smooth  with respect to CS5 on Win7 64, but I like to keep up with whatever  problems others have.

Tell us more about your system, # of corse, RAM size etc. Are you overclocked by any chance?

                            Here's the link.

                            http://www.nikforums.com/showthread.php?321-Problems-being-reported-with-Silver-Efex-2.0

Funny part is on XP, both SP2 and another install of SP3, on the same hardware same CS5, but 32bit, SEP2 runs just fine althow a little slower then SEP1.

My sig on that forum is shootist and my post is on the second page and gives all the PC info. But on XP only 3GBs of the 6 I have installed shows up.

Maybe it's the RAM in my system. When on 7 using all 6GBs the program hangs.

When I get time I'll pull out the 2 1GB sticks I have installed and see what happens. Then I'll put those 2 sticks back in and pull the 2 2GB stick and check again.

Very well could be the RAM. But I don't notice anything like this with any other program, plugin or stand alone.

                            Thanks for the reply.
