1. Re: Getting multiple audio tracks from monaural clips
Harm Millaard Mar 3, 2011 10:18 AM (in response to Jay Gladwell)Your first three audio tracks are stereo by default (check the double speaker icon at the beginning of the track).
Your imported tracks are mono (check for the single speaker icon at the beginning of the track) and placed after the stereo tracks. You can rearrange them, you can delete empty tracks, but you can not insert mono tracks into stereo tracks or the other way around.

4. Re: Getting multiple audio tracks from monaural clips
Bill Hunt Mar 3, 2011 11:17 AM (in response to Jay Gladwell)Jay,
Those first three Audio Tracks are 2-channel (see the dual "speaker" icons), and are likely set to be part of the default Sequence Preset.
If you work with 1-channel Audio sources often, in the Default Sequence settings, include X number of 1-channel (mono) tracks. When you then start a New Sequence, you will have X 1-channel Tracks above the 2-channel (you can alter that, if you do not normally use so many 2-channel Tracks).
When initially created, 1-channel Tracks will appear at the top of the list, 2-channel Tracks below, and 6-channel (5.1) Tracks below those.
Good luck,
Hunt
PS - my default Sequence is 3 1-channel, 4 2-channel, 0 6-channel and then a 5.1 (6-channel) Master.

5. Re: Getting multiple audio tracks from monaural clips
Jay Gladwell Mar 3, 2011 12:11 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Yes, I understood that from Harm's explanation and your article about the default tracks and speaker icons..
Okay, I opened a new project and created what I thought were the defaults I wanted. Now, when I drag a clip to the timeline, the video goes into Video 1 and the mono audio goes into Audio 1, but it's still creating three extra tracks (A2, A3, & A4 on tracks 3, 4, & 5) automatically. Why is it creating three extra, unnecessary tracks? How do I stop this?
I know I must appear dumb as a sack full of rocks, but this really has me bumfuzzled.

6. Re: Getting multiple audio tracks from monaural clips
JSS1138 Mar 3, 2011 12:23 PM (in response to Jay Gladwell)It's creating four tracks because your clips have four tracks. That only one actually has audio is irrelevant. The clip itself has four, Premiere accommodates. This is normal behavior.
Just delete the ones you don't want to keep. Or, ignore them. They won't do any harm.

7. Re: Getting multiple audio tracks from monaural clips
Jay Gladwell Mar 3, 2011 12:39 PM (in response to JSS1138)Jim, thanks for your input, but that's hard to imagine. When I drag the MP4 file onto the TL from BPAV folder, it only has one track.
Why would the MP4 file have one track and the MXF file have four?
Any ideas?

JSS1138 Mar 3, 2011 12:43 PM (in response to Jay Gladwell)Are both file types from the same camera?

9. Re: Getting multiple audio tracks from monaural clips
Jay Gladwell Mar 3, 2011 1:08 PM (in response to JSS1138)Yes, in fact, both are the same file--one is the camera original MP4 file and the other is the MXF file created using Sony's Clipbrowser--rewraps the MP4 in a MXF wrapper.

10. Re: Getting multiple audio tracks from monaural clips
JSS1138 Mar 3, 2011 2:21 PM (in response to Jay Gladwell)OK.
Why the MXF, then? Premiere Pro excels at native editing. If the MP4s work as you wish, why not just use them?

Jay Gladwell Mar 3, 2011 3:54 PM (in response to JSS1138)Habit is the answer.
But I'll have to change my habits, now that I'm using PPro.
Thanks!

12. Re: Getting multiple audio tracks from monaural clips
Bill Heslip Mar 3, 2011 7:00 PM (in response to Jay Gladwell)Jay,
PP CS5 is quite content editing native BPAV folders. No need to convert to .mxf. I fact, for legacy reasons, it's a better bet.
Should you want to continue using .mxf files without the extra audio tracks cluttering up your sequence, select your clip, then from the menu choose clip>modify>Audio Channels. Select mono for track format, then deselect the empty audio channels. This must be done before you place the clip in the timeline.
HTH,
Bill
