I am no pro but I just went through something exactly like this. The script is in its on frame on the root timeline correct? That was one of the things that got me.
you might want to try using your movie clip name rather than this. I dont know if it would make a difference but its worth a try.

give your MovieClip a unique instance name.. say my_mc. and refer to that instead of using 'this'
k here is a list of things that i needed to do before i got mine working
use the instance names
put script on same frame as button on seperate layer
make sure the script starts on line one in actionscript panel with minimal spaces between seperate scripts
when testing the buttons that go to seperate scenes make sure to test movie not test scene
if you copy and pasted the scripts try writing them in by hand, sometimes there are spaces or otehr things that can mess it up
don't use the goto functions. use the goto methods and don't use scene information for navigation:
