It seems that the AdvancedDataGrid control is completely missing from the separate Flex 3 SDK download ( http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flex/3/flex3sdk_b1_061107.zip).
I've just zipped up the moxie directory as installed with Flex Builder 3 Beta 1, and copied it to my Linux box. That SDK worked perfectly :)
So, is the AdvancedDataGrid control meant to be included in http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flex/3/flex3sdk_b1_061107.zip ?
I will try the latest nightly build now to see if the AdvancedDataGrid has since been included.
So I just check the latest nightly build of the SDK (build 173617), and it seems that the AdvancedDataGrid control is still not included :(
AdvancedDataGrid is part of the FlexBuilder package.
It would not be available as part of the SDK.
What does that mean?
FlexBuilder 3 installs the ActiveDataGrid source etc under the "sdk" directory, so how is it "not part of the SDK"?
And does that mean its licensed differently? ie is it (or will it be) wrong for me to copy the FlexBuilder's SDK to my Linux box for development there? Is it going to be something like Flex Charting which is a non-free separate component? (I know Flex Builder 3 will not be free, but the SDK still will be - won't it?).
And does that mean that the AdvancedDataGrid will not be included in the open source edition of Flex?
Is there someone from Adobe here who can explain the licensing around the AdvancedDataGrid control?
Or it this all just a big mis-understanding? ie AdvancedDataGrid was only accidentally left out, and will be added shortly? (fingers crossed).
The AdvancedDataGrid will be part of the Flex Data Visualization package (formerly known as Flex Charting) which does not come with the free Flex SDK. So ADG will not be part of the open source initiative, it is like the charts where once you have a license you can view the source.
So for using the ADG and other charts on a standalone SDK you can copy the SWCs from a Flex Builder installation for now.
Thanks Matt. That explains it :)
Is it enough to copy the "datavisualization.swc" from Flex 3 lib to Flex 2 lib so that we can use Advanced Datagrid in flex 2??
You can use datavisualization.swc with the Moxie libs, but NOT with Flex 2.
The data visualization components depend on some of the classes in the Moxie SDK and may not work with the Flex 2 SDK.
Thanks Swaroop, are there any samples in Flex 2 similar to AdvancedDataGrid? Actually I would like to have multi rows in header.
Yes, we do have samples!
We have a writeup that will walk you through the features (with full working code):
You can download the corresponding code and sample swfs at http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flex/3/featuresamples/advanceddatagrid_beta1.zip
We even have a video if you are interested : http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flex/videos/advanceddatagrid/
Thanks for your reply. I saw the samples. Is there any way of implementing these features in Flex 2??
That's a tough question :)
Well, one way would be to buy a license to the data visualization components to get access to the source code of ADG and then backport it to Flex 2 for your purposes :)
Swaroop, I am not able to find the license for Data Visualization components. Has it been released??
AFAIK, if you have the FB 2.0.1 key, you can use that.
