"Error 1402" prevents me from upgrading to v. 10.0.1

Yesterday I attempted to upgrade from Adobe Reader v. 7.0 to v. 10.  The install of v. 10 and the removal of v. 7 seemed to go correctly till the very end when I got the following error message:

"Error 1402  Cound not open Key  HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MSFS.  Verify that you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support personnel."

Though the v. 10 install failed, the v. 7 removal seemed to have taken place, as I no longer had v. 7 on my pc.  I finally had to restore my system to a point prior to the attempted upgrade.  I now appear to have a gimped version of v. 7 back on my system.  None of the "help" features seem to work and v. 7 can no longer correctly modify forms (such as IRS tax forms).  However, it does work after a fashion.

I am attempting to install Adobe Reader X on a home pc running XP SP3.  Anyone know how I can resolve this problem and do a correct install of v. 10.

      Thanks for any assistance.
