What version of Reader to you have on your computer? Is there any chance you changed the version of Reader in some way?
I assume you're facing this issue with Reader X(10).
Could you please confirm following:
What version are you currently on(Launch Reader. Click on Adobe Reader->About Adobe Reader menu item to know the version number)
What is the version of patch you've downloaded
Do you have any other installation of Adobe Reader on some other drive
Also, when you get the ''Choose" dialog, please browse manually to the location where you have your 'reader' installed and select the Reader application to upate. This should cause the update to work.
Please note that if you're trying to apply 10.0.2 patch, it can only be applied if you are already on version 10.0.1. I suggest that you do a 'Check for Updates' from your Adobe Reader ,Help menu item to update Reader to latest version.
10.0.2 Reader patch is incremental patch because it is a zero day patch. Quarterly patches will be cumulative. So if you have Reader X (10.0.0) installed, first download and install Reader 10.0.1 patch. Then you will be able to install Reader 10.0.2 patch. Alternatively you can do Help -> Check for Updates. This will automatically download and install all the patches.

The order should be:
1) Install Reader X (Which I believe you already have done that)
2) Install Reader 10.0.1 patch
3) Install Reader 10.0.2 patch
PS - Normally Reader X is installed in /Applications folder directly as Adobe Reader.app
Thanks for your reply. In looking at this further, the problem may be that
pdf documents open in Apple Preview rather than in Adobe Reader. So Adobe
Reader as such may not be on my computer and that's why the update is
failing. I'll speak with Apple about it and see if they can shed some
