    Flash Catalyst Indexability?

    mother goosey Level 1

      Having built my site using Catalyst to avoid having to learn code, I now read that the software lacks indexability because all text is converted to flash so it is therefore not searched and therefore not indexed by search engines - is this true?  Is there some way to build indexability into the site by taking the .swf into another product and if so, what actions would need to be taken?  I am guessing that this will require coding knowledge .

      Any insight on the above would be really appreciated.

      The software is excellent for non-coders, but I fear does have a few limitations when used in isolation.

          That is a common misunderstanding about Flash. Here is a great resource center on Flash and SEO, http://www.adobe.com/devnet/seo.html. Flash Catalyst files are just SWF built on top of the Flex Framework. For the best results, you are probably going to want to take the project into Flash Builder and enhance it with some of the deep linking functionality that exists (via some code).

          Hope this helps,

          Chris

            Thanks Chris, I'll take a look at the link

            Cheers

              Am I right in thinking if I was to create a site in Flash Catalyst myself to get a website online quickly I would then be able to pass that over to a web developer at a later date to optimise it for SEO? i.e when I can afford to

                I have been advised that you can do a degree of optimisation yourself by tweaking the man.html page that is generated (some coding knowledge probably required here) and adding keywords into media fields.  You can also add some text in the same colour as the background (smallest text possible) which is then still readable by the indexing spiders.

                  Yes, make sure you add in the proper meta tags to assist your SEO, along with a good page title. I would also look at adding in some content in the <noscript> portion of the HTML that handles the SWF.

                  I would recommend NOT doing the technique of have small text in the same color as the background. Search engines consider this bad practice and will penalize your site for it.

                    Chris, is it possible for you to give an example of how/format of adding content to the <noscript> portion of the HTML file that handles the SWF.

                    I have located the section in my HTML file, but am not sure how to add some searchable text content.

                    This is what the section of my file looks like:

                        <noscript>
                                <object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" width="970" height="800" id="Main">
                                    <param name="movie" value="Main.swf" />
                                    <param name="quality" value="high" />
                                    <param name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff" />
                                    <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" />
                                    <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" />
                                    <!--[if !IE]>-->
                                    <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="Main.swf" width="970" height="800">
                                        <param name="quality" value="high" />
                                        <param name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff" />
                                        <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" />
                                        <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" />
                                    <!--<![endif]-->
                                    <!--[if gte IE 6]>-->
                                        <p>

                                    <!--<![endif]-->
                                        <a href="http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer">

                                        </a>

                                </object>
                            </noscript>

                    Thanks so much for your help

                      Is there any way to add titles (for search engine recognition) to my FC pages/states without going into FB? I know a little code, but don't have FB.
