I have 1.5 TB of HDCAM footage on an external hard drive that I need to compress to a smaller footprint to edit with - Limited space on the edit computer.
I'm using windows 7 and premiere pro cs5 with a MPE Card.
I would use Pro Res if I was on a Mac, so I need a good equivalent on the PC side.
What's a good codec to compress this footage and edit with that will redice the file size to that close to Pro Res 422 LT - which is about ~40GB/Hour ?
Avid DNxHD is better quality then ProRes, about the same size/compression rate and is free to use. CineForm is better quality than either, works in both AVI and MOV, smaller size, but is not free. CineForm has HDLink which is an easy way to batch convert the footage. Here is a link to an article comparing CinForm wtih HDCAM SR, http://techblog.cineform.com/?p=540
Thanks for the great response!
We have one bay that we'll be using Premiere Pro CS5 on a Mac, will the Avid DNxHD codec work on mac as well?
Yes, both DNxHD and CineForm work on Mac.
