Problems with XMP and InDesign CS5

    RichardM0701 Community Member

      Hi -

I'm trying to setup a text variable on a page that pulls in particular Metadata fields of the InDesign CS5 file (Title to be exact). I keep getting a "No Intersecting Link" message no matter what I try. I experimented with other fields and no luck either. I can go into Bridge and see all the Metadata, but nothing shows up in the document. The only field that has worked is the "Name" field which is really not Metadata. I tried it on the shared network folders and also on my desktop to rule out any network issues. Has anyone experienced this? If so, how did you fix it?

          Hi Richard,

Well, there's a bug still in CS5, apparently, which I just ran into also. It is that Live Captions don't actually work, in the case of PNG files.

You can write metadata on the image file, and you can even see that metadata properly by right-mousing the file in the links panel, and viewing the the XMP metadata. However, Live Captions will not use it from a PNG file.

I could find no workaround save to export the PNG file as a TIFF, using Fireworks. A 32-bit TIFF can have transparency if you set the mat to transparent, and if needed, so you don't lose anything on use of the image in InDesign. You'll need to rewrite the metadata, as this doesn't export, and I found Bridge to be the best for that, especially if you want to cut-paste from the PNG.

Photoshop should work if you don't have Fireworks -- just use care, as  Photoshop says it will and does overwrite previous PNG metadata if you save the PNG.

Let's hope they fix the PNG captioning so it works directly, in CS5.5.

            Hi,

Thanks for the detailed response. It looks like you hit the nail on the head with this one. Have you had any issues with the InDesign .indd files or tried to pull in that metadata? I have not been able to.
