Can't see Photoshop slices in Fireworks

    kimsue02
HI - I just purchased Fireworks b/c of the lack of ImageReady. Anyway - when I open a PSD file that already has slices in Fireworks none of the slices are there. Am I missing something? How can I get the slices to import also?
      Thanks!

Add the slices in Fireworks instead.

I believe ImageReady and Fireworks handled slices differently, and that
type of integration didn't make it into the latest version of FW,
unfortunately. Nor for that matter, was the ability for Photoshop to
export PSD's as native Fireworks PNG files.

If you are only exporting the image slices for your site, you can still
do this through Photoshop by going to FILE > SAVE FOR WEB AND DEVICES.
FW's compression engine is a bit better than PS/IR, but that is the only
real difference. Keep in mind too, you can still edit the file within
PS. Most of IR's functionality for slicing was built into PS.

If you need to edit the file and wish to do so in FW, as Linda said, you
will have to redraw them in FW. If you want to match the slices as
closely as possible, you can either do a screen grab of the slice layer
in PS and bring it into FW for a reference, or make notes of slice
positions and sizes in PS and then redraw them in FW. Neither of these
is a great solution, I realize, but at least it can be done.

It's better to learn to do the slicing in Fireworks. :-)

                  Hi,
I know how to create slices in FW but I have all these old PSD files with a lot of slices in them already. So you're telling me there's no way to open these PSD files including the slices in FW? The slices get lost?

Yes. Each graphics program has their own way of creating slices in a
document. As far as I'm aware, none of them can use the slice data
                    generated by the others.

ImageReady used to be able to - such a shame that's gone. This was one of the reasons I purchased FW.

See the slices I created in a Photoshop file. Image Ready was great for creating and editing slices. Once they got rid of it I was told FW was the program to use but it seems pointless, for my needs, if FW doesn't see the PSD slices.

Fireworks is the program to use to create the slices and export them.
The workflow between Photoshop and Fireworks is somewhat different than
the workflow between Photoshop and Image Ready.

Photoshop could see, and edit slices from IR because PS was using IR's
Engine to do that work in the first place.

Now we have a dedicated app for screen and web graphics, without the
limitations of IR. FW does a lot more than IR ever did and as mentioned,
and while the workflow may be different than PS, but (IMO anyway) it is
a more practical workflow. you'll find that you can do more in FW
without having to move from application to application. If you want to
work in the PS workflow, you can do most of what IR did within PS. But
FW is the way to go with new designs.

It all comes down to how you want to work.

spend some time working with FW. It will be worth it.

                                    Hi,
I've been playing around with FW a bit. I do need to go back and forth to Photoshop. So I save the FW file as a PSD and then edit what I have to in PS. When I go back to FW I import the PSD file - is this the correct way to do this? But what happens is it brings in all the layers all over again and I have to delete the duplicate previous layers, doesn't seen like the most efficient way to work between the two programs.
                                    Am I missing something?
                                    Thanks.

Actually, I just realized, I created the slices in FW and saved the file as a PSD. I then opened this PSD file and edited it in Photoshop and I went back to FW, the slices are gone! Is there anyway of creating slices in FW, open this file in Photoshop and add more layers or whatever, re-open this file in FW and have the slices still be there?
