I am doing some very effects-heavy work in AE, and when I put the comps into Premiere Pro, my timeline freezes and my CPU gauge pegs at 100% and I can watch the CPU temp go up. Footage with no effects or very few effects play back just fine, it's just the ones with a lot of effects that cause it to freeze.
So my question is, is my CPU my bottleneck? I think the rest of my computer is pretty adequate. How much effect does the CPU have on realtime playback?
My computer consists of:
Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth X58
RAM: 24GB Patriot Extreme DDR3-1600Mhz
CPU: Intel i7 950
Graphics: Nvidia Quadro FX4000
Drives: Two WD 300GB Velociraptor Hard Drives (RAID 0)
One WD 1TB Caviar Black for storage
OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
If the CPU is my hold-up, I'm looking into the i7-990X to replace the 950.
If your system is properly tuned, you should be OK with this system. However, it raises the question of the codec and effects-heavy. What codec and what is effcts-heavy? To get a quick indication of how well tuned your system is, run the PPBM5 Benchmark
You won't get realtime playback with AE Comps in PPro Sequences, especially an AE Comp w/lots of layers/effects, regardless of hardware. MPE won't help you much here. You'll need to render first, just like I always do and I have a 980X/24GB RAM/GTX-580 setup.
