Is it worthwhile color grading H.264 footage in After Effects?

I was told it is not because H.264 footage is so compressed that color grading leaves unacceptable artifacts in the transitions and gammas and more unless you uprez it to something like ProRes 4.2.2.

      Any thoughts on this.

Is it simply pointless to color grade in H.264?

Many thanks; I'm in a bit of a quandary.
